Blue Hens Rally as Christopher Nets Game-Winner in OT

Dave Christopher Scored Twice, Including the Game-Winner in Overtime

PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Dave Christopher (Springfield/Springfield, PA) scored with 1:58 left in overtime to lift the University of Delaware to a come-from-behind 9-8 America East men's lacrosse victory over host Drexel University at soggy Drexel Field Wednesday afternoon.

Christopher took a feed from Chris Bickley and scored past Drexel goalkeeper Jordie Olivella two minutes and two seconds into the extra session to lift the Blue Hens (4-7, 2-1) to their second straight win and third in the last four games. Each of the Hens last three games have been decided by one goal.

The game marked Delaware's first overtime appearance since defeating Hofstra 8-7 last April 14. Overall the Hens have won four straight overtime games since 1996 and have been winners in seven of the last eight.

Drexel (5-5, 0-2) lost its third straight game despite the play of freshman Mark Williamson who converted four goals on the day. Scott Stewart added two goals and dished out one assist. Drexel fell to Delaware for the 23rd straight time since 1979, but this was the closest contest since a 14-12 Blue Hen win back in 1983.

Senior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY), Delaware's leading scorer with 15 goals and 19 assists entering the game, led the Blue Hens with four goals and one assist, scoring at least one point for the 38th straight game. It was Lavey's extra man goal with 10:20 left in regulation that knotted the score at 8-8. Christopher added two goals for the Hens while freshman Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) and senior Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) each had one goal and one assist.

Delaware took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter but the Dragons scored three of their own in the second stanza to send the game tied at 4-4 into halftime. Williamson scored three straight goals in the third quarter for Drexel to send the Dragons into the final stanza with a 7-6 lead.

Drexel built that lead to 8-6 when Williamson scored just 10 seconds into the fourth stanza. But Delaware battled back, cutting the lead to 8-7 four minutes later on an unassisted goal by Lehmann and tying the score just 31 seconds later when Lehmann fed Lavey for the score. Neither team scored the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Delaware goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) picked up the win with six saves, holding the Dragons scoreless for the final 16 minutes of the contest.

The Hens travel to Hempstead, NY Saturday to take on defending America East champion Hofstra at 1:30 p.m.
