March 11, 2000

CHAPEL HILL, NC -- Matt Crofton scored his team-high third goal of the game with 5:03 left to play to break the fourth tie of the game and lead the No. 8 ranked University of North Carolina to an 8-7 men's lacrosse victory over No. 16 Delaware Saturday at Fetzer Field.

The Blue Hens (2-2), a 1999 NCAA quarterfinalist who had defeated North Carolina 18-16 a year ago, had a two-game winning streak snapped despite a career-high four goals and an assist from freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD).

The Tar Heels remained unbeaten on the season at 4-0, including three wins by one goal. Crofton led North Carolina with three goals and an assist while Chase Martin added two goals and an assist. North Carolina outshot the Blue Hens 44-27.

Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) added a goal and two assists, Dave Christopher (Springfield, Pa. HS) had a goal and an assist, and Liam Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) added two assists for the Hens. Goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, PA HS) posted 12 saves in goal.

Delaware led early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) and Christopher in the first quarter. But North Carolina recovered and tied the game at 3-3 with 11:23 left in the first half. The Hens answered with two second period goals from Metzbower to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.

North Carolina went on a three-goal barrage in the third quarter to take its first lead at 6-5 with 10:40 left in the third quarter. Metzbower and Crofton then traded goals with Metzbower tying the score at 7-7 with 13:04 left to play. There was no scoring until eight minutes later when Crofton took a feed from Jeff Sonke with 5:03 remaining and scored the game-winner.

The Hens look to recover this Wednesday when they travel to No. 9 Maryland in College Park.
