Christopher Keys Blue Hens to Second Straight Win

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Junior Dave Christopher scored a career-high four goals, including three in the first half, as the No. 19 ranked University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad cruised to a 15-5 non-league win over host Rutgers Saturday at Yurcak Field.

The Blue Hens, the defending America East champions and 1999 NCAA quarterfinalists, won their second straight game and improved to 2-1 on the season. Rutgers, coming off a 4-10 record in 1999, dropped its season opener. The Hens have downed Rutgers three straight years.

Christopher (Springfield, Pa. HS), a first-year starter who scored his first two career goals in the Hens' 10-4 win over Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday night, ignited a first quarter run that keyed the Blue Hen victory.

The Hens also got three goals from junior Liam Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) and two goals each from Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY), Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY), and freshman R.C. Reed (Boys Latin/Timonium, MD). Freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) also added a goal and an assist for the Hens.

Rutgers got three goals and an assist from Keith Cromwell.

After Cromwell scored a goal just 42 seconds into the game, the Blue Hens stormed back with six unanswered goals, including three by Christopher, to take control. Delaware led 6-2 at halftime then used a six-goal third quarter to go up 12-3. Reed scored both his goals during the third stanza. David Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) posted 13 saves for the Hens, who outshot the Scarlet Knights 41-28.
