Lavey, Mullen Key Blue Hen Win over Quakers

 

NEWARK, DE -- Leading scorer Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) scored twice and dished out three assists and sophomore goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) continued his outstanding play by posting a career-high 19 saves in goal to lead No. 15 ranked University of Delaware to a 12-6 men's lacrosse win over the University of Pennsylvania Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens, making their final regular season appearance before beginning the America East Tournament this Wednesday vs. Hartford, improved to 9-5 on the season. The Quakers lost their fourth straight game and closed out the 2000 season with a record of 5-9.

Delaware, which ranks 10th in the NCAA in scoring defense allowing 8.23 goals per game, held the Quakers to just two first half goals and held an opponent to 10 goals or less for the eighth time in the last nine games. Mullen, the 14th ranked goalkeeper in NCAA Division I with a 7.95 goals allowed average and .606 save percentage, was sharp all night and did not allow a Penn goal until the 6:30 mark of the second quarter.

Lavey, seventh in the NCAA in assists, upped his season total to 38 assists. The junior also moved into 20th place on the UD all-time scoring list with 109 points.

Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY), Dave Christopher (Springfield, Pa. HS), Ken Carrington (Brewster, Mass. HS), and Liam Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) each added two goals apiece for the Hens with Wertheimer, Motta, and Christopher each adding an assist.

Peter Gilman led Penn with two goals while Todd Minerley added one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper John Carroll posted 16 saves.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 14-2 all-time at Rullo Stadium, led 4-2 at halftime and broke the game open in the third quarter when they outscored the Quakers 5-0. Christopher scored two goals in that stanza while Lavey and Motta each had one goal and one assist in the spurt.

Penn scored three straight goals to open the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 9-5 with 11:05 left, but the Hens countered with three straight of their own to go back up 12-5 with 5:15 left.
