Metzbower, Wertheimer Power Hens Over Mt. St. Mary's

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Ryan Metzbower led the way with four goals in just his second collegiate game and junior Liam Wertheimer scored two goals and dished out an assist in the first five minutes to lead No. 19 ranked University of Delaware to a 10-4 non-league men's lacrosse victory over Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Hens, who lost their season opener 14-3 to Loyola Saturday, evened their record to 1-1 as the Blue Hens jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes on the way to the victory. Delaware, a 1999 NCAA quarterfinalist, is now 9-2 all-time at two-year old Rullo Stadium.

Mt. St. Mary's, the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion which opened its season with a 19-3 loss to Maryland Saturday, did not allow a second half goal but still fell to 0-2 on the season.

Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) scored the final two goals of the first quarter to stake the Hens to a 6-2 lead and scored the final two goals of the second quarter to put the Hens up 10-2 at halftime.

Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) scored two goals just 12 seconds apart as as part of Delaware's opening 4-0 run and also assisted on two other scores to lead the Hens. Junior Dave Christopher (Springfield, Pa. HS) also added two goals and an assist and Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) added a goal and three assists.
