Mary's
NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Ryan
Metzbower led the way with four goals in just his second
collegiate game and junior Liam Wertheimer scored two
goals and dished out an assist in the first five minutes to
lead No. 19 ranked University of Delaware to a 10-4
non-league men's lacrosse victory over Mt. St. Mary's
Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.
The Hens, who lost their season opener
14-3 to Loyola Saturday, evened their record to 1-1 as the
Blue Hens jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes
on the way to the victory. Delaware, a 1999 NCAA
quarterfinalist, is now 9-2 all-time at two-year old Rullo
Stadium.
Mt. St. Mary's, the defending Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference champion which opened its
season with a 19-3 loss to Maryland Saturday, did not allow
a second half goal but still fell to 0-2 on the
season.
Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD)
scored the final two goals of the first quarter to stake the
Hens to a 6-2 lead and scored the final two goals of the
second quarter to put the Hens up 10-2 at
halftime.
Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) scored two
goals just 12 seconds apart as as part of Delaware's opening
4-0 run and also assisted on two other scores to lead the
Hens. Junior Dave Christopher (Springfield, Pa. HS)
also added two goals and an assist and Jason Lavey
(Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) added a goal and three
assists.
Mt. St. Mary's got goals from Doug
Thompson, Mark Cox, Trevor Harvey, and Mark Hargrave but
could never get closer than 10-4 with 14 seconds left in the
third quarter. Mountaineer goalkeeper Sean Elder kept his
team in the game with 18 saves, including 12 in the second
half.
Delaware, which outshot Mt. St. Mary's
43-20, got six saves from sophomore goalkeeper David
Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA).
Delaware will travel to Rutgers Saturday
for a 2 p.m. non-league matchup.
