#8 Terrapins Strike
Early to Down #18 Blue Hens
COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 9 ranked
University of Maryland scored the first three goals of the
game and held a seven-goal lead at halftime to run away with
a 13-4 non-league men's lacrosse victory over No. 18 ranked
University of Delaware Wednesday afternoon at Byrd
Stadium.
Maryland won its third straight game to
improve to 4-1 while the Hens (2-3) dropped their second
straight game, both to Top 10 ranked foes from the Atlantic
Coast Conference. The Blue Hens will return home this
Saturday, March 19, to host No. 19 Butler at Rullo Stadium.
The game was the first meeting between Delaware and Maryland
since 1988.
Andrew Combs scored three goals and Mike
LaMonica and Mike Mollot each scored twice for Maryland,
which also got 15 saves from goalkeeper Pat McGinnis in the
winning effort. Delaware got two goals from Liam
Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) and one each from Dave
Christopher (Springfield, PA HS) and Mike Thearle
(Sachem/Holbrook, NY). Delaware's Jason Lavey
(Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) dished out two
assists.
Maryland held a 42-32 advantage in shots
and a 67-37 margin on groundballs while taking advantage of
all three extra man situations.
Combs opened the scoring just one minute
into the game and Mike Mollot followed one minute later to
stake the Terrapins to a 2-0 lead. A Willy Passavia goal
with 2:47 left in the first quarter made it 3-0 before the
Hens got on the board on a goal by Wertheimer with 1:45 left
in the initial stanza.
But Maryland reeled off three more goals
before Wertheimer scored again with 10:49 left in the first
half to put the Terrapin lead at 6-2. The Terrapins than
scored the final three goals of the half to go up 9-2 at
intermission. Delaware's Thearle scored the game's only
third quarter goal, but Maryland came back with three quick
scores to start the final stanza to put the game
away.
