Reed Scores Game-Winner in OT to Stun Hofstra; Shillinglaw Wins 200th

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman R.C. Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) scored just one minute and seven seconds into overtime as the University of Delaware stunned No. 11 Hofstra 8-7 in an America East men's lacrosse game Friday night at Rullo Stadium, giving Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw his 200th career victory.

Reed charged in from the right side and fired a shot from 10 feet out past Hofstra goalkeeper Michael Demeo to lift the Hens (6-4, 2-0 America East) to their second straight win and snap a four-game winning streak by the Flying Dutchmen (5-4, 2-1).

Delaware Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw Won his 200th Career Game
The Blue Hens, the defending America East conference champions, moved into sole possession of first place as they downed the Dutchmen for the second straight year and won their ninth straight league game over two seasons.

Shillinglaw, a native of Severna Park, MD, earned his 200th victory with the win, becoming just the seventh active NCAA Division I coach to reach the milestone. The 1999 USILA national Coach of the Year, Shillinglaw is now 200-178 in his 25th season overall, including a 22-year mark of 176-161 at Delaware.

Junior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) led the Blue Hens with four goals while Reed scored twice and freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) dished out two assists.

Tom Kessler led Hofstra with three goals while Joe Kostolansky and Adam Hananel each scored twice. It was Hananel's goal with 1:48 left in regulation that sent the game into overtime.

Hofstra had won 18 straight games when holding their opponents under 10 goals since the 1998 season.

Delaware goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) came up big for the Blue Hens, posting 13 saves while facing 32 Hofstra shots. Demeo had five saves for Hofstra in the defensive struggle.

Lavey scored two first quarter goals and Reed scored his first goal with 1:14 left in the second quarter to give the Hens a 4-2 halftime lead. But Hofstra scored three goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5 before Lavey's unassisted goal with 4:04 left in the third quarter gave the Hens a 6-5 lead.

A goal by Delaware's Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskille, NY) with 13:27 left in regulation gave Delaware a 7-5 lead, but Hofstra stormed back as Kessler scored with 5:52 left and Hananel sent the game into overtime four minutes later with his second goal of the game.

Hofstra won the overtime faceoff but could not convert as Bryan Barrett (John Carroll/Bel Air, MD) stole a pass to give the Hens possession. After Delaware called a timeout, Reed drove from the right side and fired the winning goal past Demeo.
