The No. 1 seed Blue Hens
(10-5), ranked No. 15 in the nation, avenged a 10-7 loss to
No. 2 seed and 19th ranked Hartford (14-2) just one week ago
with the victory. The Blue Hens will travel to top seed
Hofstra Saturday for the America East championship game at 2
p.m. at Hofstra Stadium. The winner will earn an automatic
berth into the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra advanced with an
18-10 win over No. 4 seed Towson Wednesday night.
Delaware, the defending
America East champion, broke away from a 4-4 tie by scoring
the last five goals of the second quarter to take a 9-4 lead
into intermission. The momentum did not stop there as the
Hens ouscored the Hawks 10-0 in the third stanza to go up
19-4 heading into the final quarter.
Lavey, the nation's ninth
leading point scorer with 60 entering the game, accounted
for eight points during the 15-0 flurry with four goals and
four assists. The Hens got multiple goal efforts from seven
different players as freshman R.C. Reed scored a
career-high four goals, freshman Matt Alrich scored
three, senior Chris Purpura tallied three times, and
freshman Ryan Metzbower, senior Liam
Wertheimer, and junior Dave Christopher all
scored twice.
Hartford, which leads the
nation in wins and scoring offense (15.93), got three goals
each from senior Bryan Bendig and senior Nick Defino. The
Hawks were playing without the nation's leading scorer,
Tracey Kelusky (83 points), who injured a rib in last week's
game vs. Delaware.
Hartford tied the game at
4-4 on a goal by Frank Branca with 13:07 left in the first
quarter but did not tally again until Brian LaMastro scored
three minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to
19-5. The Hawks scored seven fourth quarter goals but it
wasn't enough.
Delaware's 23 goals was
the most scored by the Hens since a 25-5 win over Hartford
early last season.
