Wertheimer Scores Four; Lavey Ties Assist Mark in Blue Hen Win

NEWARK, DE -- Junior Liam Wertheimer (Westfield, NJ HS) scored a career-high four goals and junior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) scored a goal and tied a Rullo Stadium record with seven assists as No. 18 ranked University of Delaware handled No. 19 Butler 15-8 in a non-league men's lacrosse Top 20 showdown Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (3-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and never looked back in snapping a two-game losing streak. Butler (1-4) lost its second straight game despite two goals each from Garett Rosecrans and Doug Patterson and two assists from Matt McSweeny. Delaware now leads the series 4-1 with four straight wins.

The Hens, playing their third straight Top 20 opponent, jumped out to a 5-0 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter and were never seriously threatened. Butler scored its first goal with 37 seconds left in the first quarter, but the Hens reeled off the first three goals of the second stanza to go up 8-1.

The Bulldogs, coming off an 18-7 loss to No. 4 Georgetown Wednesday, pulled to within 12-7 with 8:52 left to play, but the Hens followed with three quick goals, two by Wertheimer, to pull away.

Freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) added three goals for the Blue Hens, including two in the first quarter, while Dave Christopher (Springfield PA HS) and R.C. Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) each scored twice.

Lavey dished out assists on the first two goals of the game and added three more assists in the second quarter on the way to his career-high eight points. Lavey's seven assists matched the Rullo Stadium record of seven set twice by Delaware's 1999 USILA National Player of the Year John Grant last season.

Delaware outshot the Bulldogs 45-35 with Blue Hens goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) notching 10 saves. Butler goalkeeper Brendan Winkler stopped 13 Delaware shots.

The Hens, who will host St. Joseph's in its next outing Saturday, also held a 16-10 advantage in faceoffs and scored four extra man goals.
