Yost Wins Weight Throw in Hens' Season Opener

HAVERFORD, PA -- The University of Delaware men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2003-2004 season Sunday by posting five first place finishes at the first annual Jack Pyrah Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet at Haverford College.

The Blue Hen women picked up first place finishes as sophomore Lissy Dean won the long jump (17-8), junior Casey Bennett captured the pole vault (10-11 3/4), freshman Rachel Young won the shot put with a school record toss of 43-6 in her first collegiate competition, and freshman Jacqueline Scogna won the weight throw with a distance of 45-2 1/2.

The Delaware men had one first place finish as Mike Yost captured the weight throw with a toss of 50-10 3/4.

Also for the Blue Hen men, Jerome Holder was second in both the 55 meter hurdles (7.76) and 300 meters (36.50) while Nick Riordan in the triple jump (40-7), Kyle Schmid in the mile (4:38.50), Charlie Williams in the 300 meters, and Ryan Benishake in the weight throw (43-5 3/4) as well as the 4 x 400 meter relay team all placed third. Riordan also placed fourth in the long jump (20-4 1/4).

Also placing second for the UD women were Elizabeth Russell in the long jump (16 1/4), Jessica Urbonas in the shot put (36-4 3/4), Tyechia Smith in the 500 meters (1:20.26), Dean in the triple jump (37-9 1/4), and Brittany Wright in the 55 meter dash (7.37). Urbonas was also third in the weight throw with a toss of 37-3.
