NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware athletes captured 12 first place finishes as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams swept the Division I team titles at the Delaware Winter Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House.
The Blue Hen women had eight first place finishes and earned 231 points to easily outdistance Princeton, Delaware State, Coppin State, and Villanova in the Division I five-team field. Johns Hopkins captured the Division II and III team title with 273 points, easily defeating runner-up Cabrini in the five-team field.
On the men’s side, Delaware athletes had four first place finishes - three by freshmen - on the way to a team score of 182.5, just edging Delaware State (179.5) for the team title. Coppin State was third followed by Villanova. Johns Hopkins won the five-team Division II & III team title with 291 points.
Taking home first place finishes for the UD women were twin sisters Yianna and Christina Antonopoulos in the 3,000 meters (10:50.30) and mile (5:19.71) respectively, the 4 x 800 meter relay (10:36.38), Kellyn Wright in the 500 meters (1:21.32), Cristine Marquez in the 400 meters (58.45), Laura Chirico in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), Amanda Marshall in the weight throw (49-5), and Asha Quant in the long jump (18-3 3/4).
Quant also placed second in the 200 meters (25.98) while Marquez was third in the 200 meters (26.16) and Isabel Graf placed third in both the 800 meters (2:36.79) and mile (5:38.94) events.
On the men’s side, Delaware excelled in the field events as Kevin McCove won the long jump (17-11), John Viotto captured the shot put (50-1 1/4), and Greg Stirparo won the weight throw (47 3/4). Jeremy Simkins (at right) also won the 60 meter hurdles (8.67) while Phil Weigel was second in both the 1,000 meters (2:44.69) and mile (4:36.09) runs.
Delaware State athletes captured eight first place finishes as NeKisha Franklin won the women’s 60 meters (7.75) and 200 meters (25.63), Larrone Moore won the men’s 60 meters (7.03) and 200 meters (22.76), Michael Taylor won the men’s 800 meters (2:00.16), Andre McDonald captured the men’s 1,000 meters (2:44.36), the women won the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:03.34), and the men won the 4 x 800 meter relay (7:56.68).
