UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- University of Delaware track and field performers posted 19 top 10 finishes, Kelli McDonald won the women’s pole vault, and the Blue Hens set one school record and two freshmen marks at the Penn State Open Saturday at Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track.
McDonald was the Blue Hens’ lone individual champion as she won the women’s pole vault with a leap of 11-feet, 9 3/4 inches while freshman John Viotto (at right) was the UD men’s top finisher as he placed third in the men’s shot put with a school freshman record of 50-feet, 10 1/4 inches.
In addition, Jeremy Simkins set a UD freshman record in the men’s 60 meter hurdles with a 12th place time of 8.87 while Kayla Hennessy established a new school record in the 60 meter hurdles by placing fifth with a time of 8.88.
The Delaware men registered four top 10 finishes as Viotto was third in the shot put, Greg Stirparo was sixth in the weight throw (47-2 1/4), Nick Alexander was seventh in the shot put (47-10), and Conrad Rapp finished eighth in the pole vault (14-9).
Jamie Igo was also 12th in the high jump (6-0), Jake Cohen was 12th in the pole vault (14-3 1/4), Simkins was 12th in the 60 meter hurdles and joined Nick Morrissey, Alex Tingue, and Mike Goldwasser in placing 12th in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:27.26).
For the Delaware women, McDonald won the pole vault, Laura Chirico was second in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), Briana Gray was fifth in the high jump (5-3), Cristine Marquez was fifth in the 200 meters (25.19) and 500 meters (1:16.19), Hennessy was fifth in the 60 meter hurdles, Yianna Antonopoulos was fifth in the 3,000 meters (10:38.96), Christine Sloat was sixth in the 3,000 meters (10:53.90), Amanda Marshall was sixth in the weight throw (48-5 1/4), and Christina Antonopoulos was sixth in the 1,000 meters (3:02.39).
Also for the UD women, the 4 x 400 meter relay of Marquez, Hennessy, Liz Harvin, and Alex Francis was seventh in 3:56.29, Isabel Graf was seventh in the 3,000 meters (10:54.30), Annie Kowtoniuk was ninth in the 3,000 meters (11:03.65), Kristi Cox was ninth in the 500 meters (1:19.80), and Annie Fulton was 10th in the triple jump (34-6 3/4).
