NEW YORK -- University of Delaware senior Will Jurkowski (at right) was the Blue Hens’ top finisher as he placed fifth in the seeded 800 meters race at the New York City Gotham Cup Meet hosted by New York University at the Armory Friday night.

A total of 15 men’s and women’s athletes competed for the Blue Hens at the meet. Members of both UD teams will also be competing at the Penn State Open Saturday, Jan. 19 in University Park, PA.

Jurkowski raced to a time of 1:56.86 to place fifth in the 800 meters to lead all Blue Hen runners. The top finisher for the UD women was Julia Somers, who was sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:40.77.

Also for the UD men, Jimmy Daly was eighth in the 3,000 meters (8:56.13), Phil Weigel was 10th in the 3,000 meters (8:56.96), Mike Tait was 10th in the 800 meters (1:58.76), Tim Brock was 11th in the mile (4:27.43), Doug Alpers was 11th in the shot put (44-10 3/4), Mike Ward placed 15th in the 3,000 meters (9:05.43), Connor Whitesel was 16th in the weight throw (43-10 1/2), Chris Martens was 21st in the pole vault (12-3 1/2), and Glenn Puzio finished 35th in the unseeded 800 meters (2:05.24).

Also for the Delaware women, Liz Paul was ninth in the 5,000 meters (19:15.00), Sarah Vernon was 10th in the 3,000 meters (11:21.91), Lexi Ambrogi finished 15th in the 3,000 meters (11:34.19), and Stephanie LaFergola was 30th in the mile (5:41.18).
