Delaware Men Finish Third at Thomson Invitational; Cantwell, Rapp Win Events

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team captured its second team title of the season and the Blue Hen men picked up a third place team finish as Delaware hosted the annual Thomson Invitational Saturday at the Delaware Field House.

The Delaware women got first place finishes from Kelli McDonald in the pole vault (11-10), Kellyn Wright in the 800 meters (2:21.47), and Cristine Marquez in the 400 meters (57.93) on the way to winning the Division I school team title with 141.5 points. Towson was second with 112 points followed by Maryland-Eastern Shore, Temple, Coppin State, Howard, Delaware State, Villanova, Maryland, and LaSalle in the 10-team field. Salisbury won the Division II-III team title with 108 points.

On the men’s side, Delaware got first place finishes from Conrad Rapp (at right) in the pole vault (14-9) and Gregg Cantwell in the 5,000 meters (15:04.82) on the way to earning 124 points and a third place finish. Delaware State won the team title with 134 points followed by Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware, Temple, Villanova, Howard, and Maryland in the seven-team field. Salisbury won the men’s Division II-III team title.

McDonald posted the second best pole vault height in school history and won her third meet title of the season while Marquez posted the second best 400 meter time in school history and posted the second best 200 meter time in UD annals (25.56) with a third place finish. Also for the Hens, Annie Kowtoniuk was second in the 3,000 meters (11:22.07), Christina Antonopoulos was second in the mile (5:12.88), Annie Fulton was third in the triple jump (33-10), Laura Chirico was third in the pole vault (10-6), Brooke Maguire was third in the 5,000 meters (19:13.61), and Stefanie LaFergola was third in the 3,000 meters (11:23.58).

On the men’s side, Matt Guida was second in the pole vault (14-3 1/4), Mike Roth was second in the 1,000 meters (2:36.72), Jared Wasser was third in the shot put (50-5 1/2), Kevin Kemmerle was third in the 5,000 meters (16:37.91), Tyler Mayforth was third in the 3,000 meters (8:53.18), and Matt Gray was third in the 1,000 meters (2:40.60).
