Delaware Track and Field Teams Post Six All-Time Top 10 Times at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK -- University of Delaware track and field athletes posted six all-time top 10 times as the Blue Hens competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational this weekend at the New York City Armory.

The meet featured some of the top men’s and women’s teams in the country, including Florida, Florida State, Louisiana State, and Arkansas as well as the top teams in the East.

Delaware athletes collected four top 10 finishes in the meet as Kyle Schmid (at right) placed fifth in the men’s 5,000 meters (14:56.94), the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team of Laura Heenan, Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, and Kellyn Wright placed eighth (9:26.98), Kelli McDonald was eighth in the women’s pole vault (11-3 3/4), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Daniella Price, Asha Quant, Alexi Capsouras, and Cristine Marquez placed ninth (3:51.61).

The women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team set a new Delaware record with a time of 9:26.98, besting the previous mark kof 9:34.59 by Jacqui Tweed, Katie Guarracino, Jill Riblett, and Murphee Hayes in 1993. The women’s 4 x 400 meter relay team registered the second fastest time in school history while Schmid’s time in the 5,000 meters ranks No. 8 all-time at Delaware.

Also for the Hens, Marquez placed 35th in the women’s 400 meters with the second best time in school history (57.41), Price ran the second fastest UD women’s 60 meters time (7.76) to place 32nd, Wright placed 20th in the women’s 800 meters with the fifth best time in UD history (2:18.20), and Gregg Cantwell posted the 10th best men’s 3,000 meter time (8:37.37) in UD history for a 30th place finish.

Other Delaware top 25 finishes were Mike Zeberkiewicz placing 19th in the men’s 800 meters (1:58.84), Christina Antonopoulos finishing 20th in the women’s mile (5:10.86), Yianna Antonopoulos posting a 21st place finish in the women’s mile (5:11.74), Rachel Young placing 21st in the women’s shot put (44-4 1/4), and Jared Wasser finishing 22nd in the men’s shot put (51-9 3/4).
