Young Wins Shot Put Again, O’Brian Top Men’s Finisher for Delaware Track and Field Teams at Gotham Cup

NEW YORK -- Senior Rachel Young won the shot put for the second straight meet, Kelli McDonald placed second in the women’s pole vault, and Matt O’Brian (at right) had the Blue Hen men’s top finish with a third place in the 5,000 meter run to highlight performances by the University of Delaware indoor track and field teams at the Gotham Cup Invitational Friday night at the New York City Armory.

Young, who won last week’s Fordham Invitational shot put title at the same venue, tossed the shot 13.88 meters to win the competition and claim her 14th career meet title. McDonald placed second in the pole vault with a leap of 3.45 meters. O’Brian was the Delaware men’s top finisher as he ran to a time of 15:38.52 to place third in the 5,000 meters.

The Delaware women posted nine top 10 finishes as the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, Laura Heenan, and Kellyn Wright was fifth in 9:42.87, Wright was sixth in the 800 meters (2:22.02), Amanda Marshall was seventh in the shot put (13.03meters), Asha Quant was seventh in the long jump (5.34 meters), Brooke Maguire was eighth in the seeded 3,000 meters (10:40.90), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Michelle Gomes, Liz Harvin, Cristine Marquez, and Alexi Capsouras was eighth (3:55.85), and Laura Chirico finished 10th in the pole vault (3.15 meters). Gomes also placed 11th in the 60 meters with the second best time in school history (7.79), and Capsouras also placed 11th in the 500 meters (1:19.91) and 12th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.32).

The Delaware men collected eight top 10 finishes as Jared Wasser was fifth in the shot put (15.68 meters), Conrad Rupp was sixth in the pole vault (4.20 meters), Chris Johnson was sixth in the 60 meters (7.33), Dave DiVirgilio was eighth in the pole vault (4.20 meters), Matt Arbaugh was ninth in the pole vault (4.05 meters), Matt Guida was ninth in the pole vault (4.05 meters), and the distance medley relay team of Gregg Cantwell, Tim Brock, Matt Gray, and Mike Zeberkiewicz was 10th (10:50.53).
