Guida Wins Pole Vault as Delaware Men Place Second at Delaware Invitational

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field squad won four events and placed second in the team standings and the Delaware men had one first place finish and posted a second place team showing at the Delaware Invitational held Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House.

Delaware State captured first place on the Division I women’s side with 184.5 points followed by Delaware (179.3), Villanova, LaSalle, and Coppin State. West Chester won the Division II/III women's title followed by Lincoln, Swarthmore, and Widener.

On the men’s side, Delaware State won the Division I title followed by Delaware, Villanova, LaSalle, and Coppin State. West Chester won the Division II/III title followed by Lincoln, Widener, and Swarthmore.

Taking first place finishes for the Blue Hens were women’s 4 x 400 meter relay (4:01.97), Brooke Maguire in the women’s 5,000 meters (18:39.71), Rachel Young in the women’s shot put (13.80 meters), Asha Quant in the women’s long jump (5.50 meters), and Matt Guida (at right) in the men’s pole vault (4.50 meters). Young won the shot put event for the third time in four events this season.

Delaware athletes taking second place finishes were the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay (10:01.26), Yianna Antonopoulos in the women’s 800 meters (2:27.76), Michelle Gomes in the women’s 60 meters (7.76), Christina Antonopoulos in the women’s mile (5:14.10), Amanda Marshall in the women’s shot put (12.52 meters), Stephanie Cronk in the women’s weight throw (13.00 meters), Quant in the women’s 200 meters (25.90), Dave DiVirgilio in the men’s pole vault (4.05 meters), Doug Alpers in the men’s weight throw (13.81 meters), the men’s 4 x 800 meter relay (8:25.57), and Gregg Cantwell in the 3,000 meters (8:47.42).
