Bradley Takes Hurdles Title as Delaware Opens Season at Pyrah Invitational

HAVERFORD, PA -- University of Delaware athletes picked up four first place finishes as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s indoor track teams opened the 2005-06 season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational Friday at Haverford College.

Junior Rachel Young broke her own school record in winning the shot put, freshman Kelli McDonald captured the pole vault competition in her first collegiate action, and sophomore Asha Quant was a winner in the long jump for the UD women while sophomore Jay Bradley won the 55 meter hurdles for the Delaware men.

In addition to Delaware, also competing at the meet were co-host Villanova, Maryland, Temple, LaSalle, Franklin & Marshall, Cabrini, Haverford, and Swarthmore, Widener, and Ursinus.

Young threw the shot put 45-4 1/2 to break her record of 43-11 1/4 set during her freshman year in 2004, McDonald captured the pole vault with a leap of 11-0, the third best leap in school history, and Quant posted the third best long jump in school history in winning that competition with a leap of 18 1/2.

Also for the Delaware women, Alexi Capsouras was second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.79 (fifth best time in school history) and eighth in the 300 meters (43.90), Paula Green was second in the 300 meters in 43.06 (fourth best in UD history) and fourth in the 55 meters (7.43), Brittany Wright was second in the 55 meters (7.34) and fourth in the 300 meters (43.12). Young also placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 40-7 1/2 while Quant was sixth in the 300 meters (43.58)and ninth in the 55 meters (7.61).

Bradley captured the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.84.

Also for the Hens, the 4 x 400 meter relay team was second in a time of 3:35.24, Kyle Casella was third in the weight throw (47-1) and sixth in the shot put (45-1), Brandon Swartout was third in the long jump (20-8 1/2), Dave DiVirgilio was third in the pole vault (13-0), and Matt Arbaugh was third in the pole vault (13-0).
