DiNozzi Sets UD Pole Vault Record to Highlight Opener

NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware freshman Jon DiNozzi set a school record in winning the men's pole vault and Delaware State University runners Sherise Spence and Joshwyn Abrams each won multiple events in a non-scoring indoor track and field meet Friday at Delaware Field House.

The non-scoring dual meet between host Delaware and Delaware State was the season opener for the Blue Hen men's and women's indoor track and field teams.

Delaware State won nine of the 16 events in the men's section while the Hornet women won nine of the 16 events.

On the men's side, DiNozzi leaped to a height of 15 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault to win the event and qualify for the IC4A championships in February. His leap broke the UD record of 15-3 set by Tom Wilson in 1979, the fifth longest standing record in UD history.

Also winning for the Blue Hen men were Robb Munro in the mile (4:37.98), Jeff Emery in the long jump (19-9), Sam Yarrington in the 35 lb. weight throw (51-2), Brandon Nesbitt in the 500 meters (1:11.17), Chris Miller in the triple jump (36-5 3/4), and Pat Riley in the 3,000 meters (9:07.70). Yarrington also placed second in the shot put (42-10).

Abrams led Delaware State with three first place finishes, capturing the 60 meters (7.03), 400 meters (52.10), and 200 meters (22.97). Other Hornet winners were David Kuti in the 60 meter hurdles (8.55), Andre Hunter in the 1,000 meter (2:52.43), LaShawn Smith in the 800 meters (2:00.16), Delaine Wilson in the shot put (45-6), and Adrian Nelson in the high jump (6-7).

On the women's side, Delaware's State Spence won both the 60 meters (7.93) and 200 meters (26.28) to lead the way.

Delaware picked up victories from Melissa Calvanico in the weight throw (41-10), Tyechia Smith in the 60 meter hurdles (10.37), Stephanie Kuehne in the high jump (5-0), Laura Dietrich in the triple jump (34-8), Karen Reber in the mile (5:37.30), Aimee Alexander in the 3,000 meters (11:06.84), and Marta Pepe in the pole vault (10-0). Alexander also placed second in the mile (5:37.48) and Calvanico was second in the shot put (41-3).
