Sept. 20, 2003 Riley Wins Individual Title Again as Hens Place Second NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior Patrick Riley won his second straight individual title to lead the UD men to a third place team finish and the Blue Hen women placed fifth in the team standings led by a 12th place finish by senior Erin Gemmill at the Delaware Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park. The University of Pennsylvania swept the men's and women's Division I team titles as the Quaker men placed six runners in the top 10 to post 20 points and outdistance runner-up Delaware. In the women's race, Penn put five runners in the top 10 to earn 26 points to outdistance Saint Joseph's. The field included seven men's teams and nine women's teams. In the Division II/III team standings, Stockton paced the five-team men's field with 28 points while West Chester won the women's race with 24 points in the four-team field. The Penn men earned 20 points followed by Delaware (39), Hofstra (97), Loyola (109), Towson (134), Delaware State (169), and Morgan State (209). In the women's race, Penn won with 26 points followed by Saint Joseph's (56), Loyola (69), Hofstra (112), Delaware (133), Towson (138), Morgan State (229), Delaware State (254), and Coppin State (271). Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE), who won last week's Towson Invitational, earned his second straight individual title and seventh of his career as he covered the 8,000 meter course in 25:51.27, more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Steve Hayes of Pennsylvania who ran to a time of 26:11.03. The Quakers placed five runners in the top six. Also for Delaware, sophomore Kevin DuPrey (Lampeter-Strasburg/Strasburg, PA) placed seventh in 27:07.15, freshman P.J. Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE) was eighth in 27:12.72, sophomore Dan Frey (York Suburban/York, PA) was 11th (27:26.40), senior John Morgan (San Clemente/Ladera Ranch, CA) was 12th in 27:30.11, and Mike Sadowsky (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) was 14th in 27:32.64. For the UD women, Gemmill (Penn Manor/Millersville, PA) paced the Hens for the 10th straight race since last season, finishing 12th overall with a time of 19:41.42 in the 5,000-meter race. Loyola's Andrea Rovegno won in a time of 18:57.29, downing Penn's Emily Logan by just over seven seconds. Also for the UD women, junior Kate Klim (Barnstable/Cummaquid, MA) was 28th (20:24.11), sophomore Sari Weissbard (Fairlawn/Fairlawn, NJ) was 30th (20:32.25), freshman Meghan Weaver (Archbishop Spalding/Harwood,MD) was 32nd (20:40.67), and senior Mary Martini (Bishop McDevitt/Harrisburg, PA) was 44th (21:15.76).
