BRONX, NY -- Sophomore Christina Antonopoulos covered the hallowed 3.1-mile course at Van Courtland State Park in 18:40 to place 23rd overall and lead the University of Delaware women's cross-country team to a ninth-place finish Saturday at the East Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
The Delaware men, meanwhile, placed 15th in the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championships on the strength of a 36th-place finish by senior Kyle Schmid (right), who covered the five-mile Van Courtland circuit in 25:59.
Antonopoulos has now led the Hens in six consecutive races. Freshman Cassie White also ran well for the Blue Hen women, following Antonopoulos home in 32nd place at 18:51. Sophomore Yianna Antonopoulos capped off a strong year in 45th (19:27), while junior Liz Paul (64th, 20:04) and freshman Jennifer Watunya (65th, 20:12) closed out the scoring for the Hens, who ended the day with 229 points.
Schmid was Delaware's top finisher for the fifth time this season, while sophomore Nick Pyle blazed the course in 26:35 to cross the line in 72nd place. The UD women placed ninth in the 2006 ECAC meet. The men placed 13th at last year's IC4A meet and haven't broken into the top 10 since 2003, when the Hens finished 10th.
Villanova won the ECAC team title with 43 points thanks to a 1-2-4 finish from Callie Hogan, Akilah Vargas, and Alison Smith, while a deep Georgetown squad rolled to the IC4A championship with 38 points. Daniel Nunn and Alex Mason placed first and second, respectively, to pace the Hoyas, who placed four runners in the top nine.
