P.J. Meany Wins as University of Delaware Men's Cross Country Team Opens 2006 Season by Capturing Hofstra Invitational

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- University of Delaware senior P.J. Meany (right) won the men’s race as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s cross country teams each opened their 2006 seasons by winning the First Annual Hofstra University Invitational Saturday morning.

The Delaware men had the top 10 finishers as the Blue Hens totaled 15 points to easily wiin the meet. Hofstra placed second with 56 points, while Wagner was third with 78 points and New Jersey Institute of Technology was fourth with 107 points. The Blue Hen women finished with 25 points, ahead of Hofstra with 48 points, St. John’s with 81 points and Wagner with 86 points.

Meany won the five-kilometer men’s course in 15:24.86, finishing ahead of teammates Kyle Schmid in 15:27.94 and Gregg Cantwell in 15:45.72. Tyler Mayforth was fourth in 15:46.86, while Brad Dodson came in fifth in 15:52.21 and Chris Bourke finished sixth in 16:01.40.

Mike Zeberkiewicz placed seventh in 16:10.33, Tim Brock was eighth in 16:15.73, Matt O’Brian finished ninth in 16:17.54, and Alex Gambogi came in 10th in 16:21.36.

The Delaware women were led by junior Colleen O’Brien, who finished third in the five-kilometer race in 18:39.49. Julia Somers was fourth in 18:50.09, while Christina Antonopoulos placed fifth in 19:11.98. Jessica Leitsch finished sixth in 19:29.736, while Liz Paul came in seventh in 19:40.65 and Brooke Maguire finished eighth in 19:41.37.

Yianna Antonopoulos finished 11th in 20:04.52 for the Blue Hens, while Annie Kowtuniak placed 14th in 20:05.59. Mary Sullivan of Hofstra won the race in 18:27.96.

Both Blue Hen teams return to action on Saturday, September 16 when they host the first Delaware Invitational. The men’s race will start at 10:30 a.m. while the women’s race will begin at 11:15 a.m.
