Delaware Men's Cross Country Announces 2004 Post-Season Awards; Meany Named Most Valuable Athlete

NEWARK, DE --- University of Delaware men's cross country head coach Jim Fischer has announced his team's season-ending award winners as well as team captains for the 2005 season.

Sophomore P.J. Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE - at right) ) was named Most Valuable Athlete, sophomores Tyler Mayforth (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) and Jeremy Lambert (Middletown/Dover, DE) were named Most Improved Athletes, and freshman Kyle Schmid (Towson/Lutherville, MD) was named Most Outstanding Rookie.

In addition, Kevin DuPrey (Lampeter-Strasburg/Strasburg, PA), Peter Kane (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck, NY), Lambert, and Meany have been named co-captains for the 2005 season.

Meany was a dominant runner throughout the 2004 season, placing as the top Delaware finisher in six of the team's seven meets, including first place overall finishes at the Towson Invitational and Delaware Invitational #1 the first two weeks of the season. He also placed second at the Delaware Invitational #2, eighth at the Great American Festival meet, and 23rd at the Colonial Athletic Association championships. He also led the Hens at the NCAA District II meet (60th) and at the IC4A championships (49th).

Mayforth competed in all seven meets and recorded the team's top finish at the CAA championship when he placed 22nd overall with a time of 27:02. He also placed sixth at the Delaware Invitational #2, 16th at the Delaware Invitational #1, and 20th at both the Towson Invitational and in the open race at the Great American Festival.

Lambert competed in the first four meets of the season, placing 12th at the Delaware Invitational #2, 20th at the Delaware Invitational #1, 44th at Towson, and 33rd at the Great American Festival.

Schmid posted two top 10 finishes during his freshman campaign, placing seventh at the Delaware Invitational #1 and ninth at the Towson Invitational in his collegiate debut. He also was Delaware's seventh place finisher at the CAA championships with a 36th place overall finish.

DuPrey, a three-year letterwinner, placed 35th at the CAA championships this past season while Kane, a two-year letterwinner, placed 28th at the CAA meet.

Delaware competed in seven meets during the 2004 seasons, placing fourth at the Colonial Athletic Association championships, 15th at the NCAA District II championships, and capturing the team title at the Delaware Invitational #2.
