Delaware vs.
Rider
November 23, 1998
Delaware 78, Rider 68
Junior forward Mike Pegues scored a game-high 27
points and pulled nine rebounds and junior guard Kestutis
Marciulionis provided the spark off the bench with 18
points as the University of Delaware men's basketball team
recorded the biggest comeback victory in school history,
rallying for a 78-68 non-conference win over Rider Monday
night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (3-0), off to their best start since
1994-95, rallied from a 30-6 first half deficit to post
their 12th straight home victory. Rider, an 1998 NIT
participant, fell to 1-1 despite 17 points from junior
forward Ken Lacey.
Rider, which also got 11 points from Greg Burston, used a
20-0 run early in the contest on the way to a 30-6 lead with
10:08 in the opening half. Rider eventually cooled down but
still took a 41-34 lead into intermission.
Pegues and Marciulionis combined for 31 of Delaware's
points in the half. Rider went back up by 13 points in the
second half but the Blue Hens chipped away and finally took
the lead at 61-59 on a John Gordon (10 points) jumper
with 6:09 left to play that was part of a 13-0 run.
The Hens, who hit all six free throws in the final two
minutes, led by at least five points the rest of the way.
Sophomore Madou Diouf added 10 points off the bench
for the Blue Hens.
