NCAA EAST
REGIONALS
Tennessee 62, Delaware
52
March 12, 1999
Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte, NC
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Delaware's fourth
trip to the NCAA Tournament was a near-miss as No. 20 ranked
Tennessee pulled away midway through the second half on the
way to the 62-52 win in the first round of the NCAA East
Regionals at the Charlotte Coliseum.
No. 4 seed Tennessee (21-8), the
champions of the Southeastern Conference East Division, won
its first NCAA Tournament game since 1983 while the No. 13
seed Blue Hens had a 13-game win streak snapped and dropped
to 0-4 in NCAA play. The Hens finished with a record of
25-6, the second best season in Delaware men's basketball
history.
Delaware's Mike Pegues hit a
turnaround jumper with 11:15 left to play to cut the UT lead
to 36-35, but Volunteer forward Vincent Yarbrough scored
four points and guard Brandon Wharton nailed a three-pointer
and the Hens never got closer than six points the rest of
the way.
Wharton scored 16 points and forward
Isiah Victor came off the bench to add 14 points and pull 14
rebounds to lead the Volunteers. Pegues was the Hens' only
player in double figures with 23 points and 10 rebounds
while center John Bennett pulled 14 rebounds. Pegues
set a UD single season record with 675 points. Delaware's
No. 2 scorer, guard John Gordon, was held to just
seven points and just one three-pointer.
The game was a sloppy one as the teams
combined for 36 turnovers and neither shot better than 33
percent from the field. The Hens hit on 18 of 57 shots from
the field (.298) and connected on just 2 of 15
three-pointers while Tennessee hit on 20 of 61 shots (.328),
including just 3 of 17 from the three-point arc. The Hens'
52 points and two three-pointers were both season lows.
