MIKE PEGUES
Junior • Forward • 6-5 • Forestville, MD

One of the top frontcourt players in America East...called by Mike Brey the team's "bread and butter"...has outstanding moves and good touch in the post...earned first team All-America East honors last season when he averaged a team-high 16.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game and shot 51.1 percent from the field and 73.1 percent from the line...scored in doubles figures in final 21 games he played in...scored 55 points and pulled 22 rebounds in three America East Tournament games to earn All-Tournament honors...scored career-high 32 points vs. Hofstra and had 27 points at Maine...fractured his left hand in practice in mid-February but missed just one game...wore soft cast rest of the season...averaged 6.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg mostly as a backup as a freshman in 1996-97...averaged 14 ppg and 8 rpg as a senior at national power DeMatha HS, leading squad to 31-5 record and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title...first DeMatha player to be named captain for entire season since 1969....earned first team All-WCAC honors and competed for Washington Metro All-Stars vs. U.S. All-Stars in April...CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate as an arts and sciences major...both parents played college basketball.

 

TYRONE PERRY

Co-captain...charismatic player in the classic point guard mold...will run the Blue Hen offense for the third straight year...started 27 games and averaged 9.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game and had team-high 54 steals in 1997-98...led team in three-point shooting (61 of 149 for 40.9 percent) and free throw shooting (78.6)... had season high 23 points vs. George Washington to earn All-Tournament honors at GW Tournament...averaged 6.1 points, a team-high 4.0 assists, team-high 2.0 steals, shot 72.7 percent from the foul line and ranked second on team with 32 three-pointers...averaged 6.9 points and 2.6 assists per game and hit a UD freshman record 39 three-pointers (37.9 percent) in 1995-96...hit school record seven three pointers and finished with 23 points in 79-73 loss at Duke...Brey's first recruit at Delaware...two-time All-District player who also played quarterback for Warwick HS football team...criminal justice major...active as camp counselor and working with local Newark Boys & Girls Club.

 

DARRYL PRESLEY

Will sit out the 1998-99 season after being dismissed from UD for violating the University's Academic Code...Outstanding athlete with long arms and great leaping ability...can drive to the basket and also had good touch from 18 feet...made an immediate impact in first season at Delaware after transferring from University of Virginia...led team in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and field goal shooting (.541) and ranked second on team in scoring (12.9 ppg), blocked shots (23), and free throw shooting (.785)...scored in double figures five times with high of 29 at Maine...enjoyed a great post-season, scoring 41 points and pulling 37 rebounds in America East Tournament to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors...had 25 points and 13 rebounds in America East title game vs. Boston University after pulling 15 rebounds in semifinal win over Hofstra...had 12 points and nine rebounds in NCAA Tournament loss to Purdue...played in 10 games, averaging 4.7 minutes per game at Virginia and scoring six points with 17 rebounds...standout forward at famed DeMatha HS where he was a teammate of Mike Pegues...Converse and USA Today All-American as a senior when he averaged 13.3 ppg and 7.8 rpg...team Most Valuable Player...averaged 12.7 ppg and 7.4 rpg as a junior...competed for USA All-Star team in Germany in 1994...business major...worked as counselor at Newark Boys and Girls Club last summer...father, Denver, ran track at Texas Southern University...business major.

Good shooting swingman and an outstanding scorer...played in 29 games with 22 starts as a redshirt freshman last season...averaged 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game and also dished out 49 assists, shot .698 from the line, and was the Hens' third leading three-point shooter with 36 (.387)...started the final 19 games and scored in double figures six times with season-high of 16 points at Hartford...sat out freshman season in 1996-97 to retain freshman eligibility...earned second team All-State honors for Rancocas Valley HS in 1995-96, leading squad to state Group 3 title...averaged 17 ppg, 10 rpg, and 6 apg for team that went 23-4...averaged 10 ppg as a junior for 24-5 team that won section title...arts and sciences major at Delaware...younger brother, Dan, is one of the nation's top college freshmen this season at the University of Maryland.

 

JOHN BENNETT

Co-captain...adds solid backup support at center...outstanding shot blocker and defensive player....played in 30 games with four starts last season, averaging 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and ranking third in America East with 40 blocked shots...career 58.7 percent field goal shooter...had 11 points vs. Boston University...will team with newcomer, 7-1 Ndongo Ndiaye, to give the Hens an intimidating force inside...played in 27 games with three starts as a sophomore in 1996-97, averaging 2.5 ppg and 2.3 rpg with 10 blocked shots in 9.4 minutes per game...scored season-high 10 points in win over Florida...averaged 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 23 games as a redshirt freshman in 1995-96...had freshman record five blocked shots in eight minutes of play vs. Hartford in 1995-96...scored 1,246 career points at Middletown HS where he also was a quarterback for football team...honor student in environmental engineering major...plays the guitar...father, Bill, played basketball at Pitt.

Exciting left-handed shooter who can play shooting guard or point guard...Blue Hens' spark off the bench with his all-out play and potent three-point shooting...played in 30 games with eight starts in 1997-98, averaging 9.7 points per game and ranking second on team with 57 three pointers (.329)...shot .727 from the foul line...had career-high 22 points in early season win over Hofstra and had 17 points off the bench in America East Tournament win over Towson...hit on 13 of 17 free throws in win at Hartford...71 percent of his shots last season were three-point attempts...played in all 31 games as a freshman in 1996-97 and averaged 5.1 points and was third on team with 29 three-pointers...shot 75.5 percent from the line...has valuable international experience...touring with Lithuania Under 22 team this summer at Italy for the second straight year...averaged 13 ppg and 5 apg in 1995-96 at Hargraves Military Academy (Chatham, VA) that went 29-3...averaged 20.2 ppg and was third team All-Metro at Huguenot Academy (Richmond, VA) in 1994-95....business major.

Athletic swingman in his second season...one of three Senegal natives on Blue Hen squad...entered school late last fall from Senegal but moved right into key spot as a backup...played in 28 games and had three starts...averaged 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game while dishing out 17 assists in 8.7 minutes per game...had best game vs. Delaware State when had nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists...can play points guard or shooting guard...outstanding defensive player with long arms...will play in World Championships in Greece with Senegal National Team this summer...one of the nation's top young players...attended Universitie de Dakar for one year before coming to Delaware this summer...business major...given name is Mamadou.

 

FRED GONZALEZ
Senior • Forward • 6-9 • San Marcos, TX

One of five seniors on squad...lean forward who is an effective outside shooter...three-year backup...scored 16 points in 11 games in 1997-98...scored 11 points in 16 games in 1996-97...had seven points and three rebounds in 14 games in 1995-96...native of Mexico who attended New Mexico Military Institute where he was an All-State pick and a teammate of Duke forward Taymon Domzalski...father played professional basketball in Mexico...business major.

One of five seniors...hard-working walk-on who has played backup role the last three seasons...played in 10 games and scored 10 points in 1997-98...played in just three games as a freshman in 1995-96 but appeared in 13 games in 19976-97 when he scored five points and had six rebounds in 34 minutes...solid defensive player who works hard...earned honorable mention All-State honors at Milford (Del.) HS...agricultural business major.

Third-year team member who continues to improve...good athlete who gets up the floor quickly and can block shots...played in 11 games in 1997-98, scoring nine points, pulling six rebounds, and blocking two shots...played in 12 games in 1996-97 in his first season of organized basketball...scored five points and pulled 10 rebounds...crowd favorite...native of Dakar, Senegal who attended Universitie de Reims in France the previous two years...discovered by UD staff on a trip to visit a cousin in Washington, DC...honor student as finance major...parents are both agronomic engineers in Senegal...nicknamed "Big Mo".

Sophomore with good offensive skills...played in nine games as a freshman, scoring 12 points, including two three-pointers...had six points in late season win over Widener...enjoyed outstanding two-sport career in basketball and soccer at Pocomoke HS...scored 1,100 career points...averaged 16 ppg, 4.5 rpg, and 6 apg and shot 42 percent from three-point line as a senior when he led team to 18-7 record and regional semifinals...first team all-conference...four-year starter in soccer...earned All-State honors as a senior when he scored 16 goals from defensive position...led team to state title in 1995...also played tennis...basketball coach, David Byrd, is the father of UD field hockey All-Region standout Jodi Byrd

Begins first season at Delaware after sitting out the 1997-98 due to NCAA transfer rules...transferred from America East foe University of Maine...expected to move right into Blue Hen starting lineup at shooting guard...one of the league's top shooters and clutch performers...earned first team All-America East honors in 1996-97 when he averaged 14.7 ppg and led America East in three-point shooting (85 of 209 for .4-07) and free throw shooting (.848)...earned league All-Rookie notice in 1995-96 when he averaged 13.2 ppg off the bench and hit on 72 three-pointers (.419)...had 34 points vs. New Hampshire...enjoyed outstanding career at nearby St. Mark's HS, leading team to 1995 undefeated state title when he was the state Player of the Year...scored 1,485 career points...physical education major...was greeted by record crowds in his return to Bob Carpenter Center while playing at Maine.

 

NDONGO NDIAYE

Transfer from Providence where he was a key backup the last two seasons...will become eligible Dec. 20...spirited player who is expected to battle for starting spot at center...intimidating shot-blocker who runs the floor well...becomes the first seven-footer in Delaware history...played in just five games in 1997-98 under head coach Pete Gillen, averaging 1.6 ppg and 1.2 rpg in 7.4 minutes per game before transfer...played in 32 games as a backup in 1996-97, averaging 0.7 ppg and 1.0 rpg....came to Providence after playing one season at Suffield (Conn.) Academy where he earned All-State honors, averaging 21 ppg, 14 rpg, and 7.0 blocks per game...member of the Senegal National team that will play in the World Championships this summer in Greece...name pronounced Dongo En-jie...business major....speaks five languages...played soccer at Demba Diop High School in Senegal.

 

BILLY WELLS
Junior • Guard • 6-2 • Baltimore, MD

Will sit out the 1998-99 season per NCAA transfer rules...played previous three seasons at Tulane University in New Orleans...will be expected to take over starting point guard spot in 1999-2000...a two-year key backup at Tulane under coach Perry Clark...played in 29 games in 1996-97, averaging 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game while dishing out 42 assists...appeared in 28 games in 1997-98, averaging 4.0 ppg and 2.2 rpg while dishing out 52 assists...scored 17 points vs. DePaul...standout at Baltimore's Dunbar HS where he averaged 15 ppg as a senior to earn All-State honors...played one season at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX where he averaged 33 points and 7 assists per game.
