WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Marc Egerson (at right) recorded 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Alphonso Dawson added 15 points and six boards as the University of Delaware men’s basketball team posted a 58-51 Colonial Athletic Association road victory over William & Mary Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 5-7 on the season, improved to 2-0 in the conference for the first time since the 2001-02 season, Delaware’s first season in the league. Delaware, which won its 10th straight game over William & Mary and its fifth consecutive contest in Williamsburg, snapped a nine-game league road losing streak since a 57-52 overtime triumph over the Tribe on February 15, 2006.

William & Mary, which fell to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference, lost for the 13th time in the last 14 meetings with the Blue Hens. The Tribe was led by Peter Stein, who led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field. Nathan Mann added 12 points for William & Mary, but all other Tribe players combined to make just four field goals.

William & Mary took an early 10-2 lead at 15:37 mark of the first half thanks to seven points by Stein, and the Tribe still led 17-9 with 8:55 to play before the Blue Hens scored six consecutive points to pull within two.

William & Mary extended its advantage to 22-15 with 5:55 remaining in the period, but D.J. Boney hit a three-pointer and Alphonso Dawson scored consecutive baskets to pull Delaware even at the 2:44 mark. David Schneider hit one free throw to put the Tribe back in front, but another bucket by Dawson gave the Blue Hens their first lead of the game as Delaware took a 24-23 edge into halftime.

The Blue Hens opened the second half scoring when Brian Johnson hit Jim Ledsome for an emphatic alley-oop dunk, and Dawson drained a three-pointer to make it a 29-23 game with 18:18 remaining. Stein ended William & Mary’s nine-minute field goal drought with a layup, but Brian Johnson answered with a driving layup at the other end to again put Delaware up six points.

A jumper by Nathan Mann pulled the Tribe within 31-27, but Egerson hit two free throws, Dawson drained a jumper and Sam McMahon nailed a three-pointer during a 7-0 UD run as Delaware took its largest lead of the night at 38-27 with 13:26 to go.

William & Mary responded with a 6-0 run to get within 38-33 at 10:22, but the Blue Hens went back up nine at 46-37 when Egerson converted a left-handed layup at the 5:09 mark.

However, Stein answered with two baskets and Laimis Kisielius made one of two free throws to make it a 46-42 game with 4:07 remaining. But Egerson swished a 19-foot jumper, and after two free throws by Stein, Herb Courtney hit a pair of foul shots to put Delaware ahead 50-44 with 2:29 to play.

A three-pointer by Mann cut the UD lead to 52-49 with 1:18 left, and the Tribe had a chance to tie the game after forcing a five-second violation before the inbounds pass. However Mann missed a jumper, and after Johnson grabbed the rebound, he hit one of two free throws to make it a four-point game with 48 seconds left. William & Mary then threw the ball out of bounds, and two more free throws by Johnson with 36 seconds left sealed the victory for Delaware.

“We wanted to focus on getting some offensive rebounds tonight, since William & Mary is such a tough defensive team and we wanted to get more opportunities to score,” said UD second-year head coach Monté Ross, whose team held a 38-34 rebounding advantage. “To win on the road you have to hit your foul shots, and Brian Johnson did a great job of getting himself in a position to get fouled and then knocking down his free throws late in the game.”

The Blue Hens shot just 37.5 percent from the field but held William & Mary to only 31.5 percent from the floor as the Tribe, which entered the game leading the CAA with 7.7 three-pointers made per game, went just 4 of 19 from behind the arc.

Delaware closes out its three-game road trip on Saturday with a 4 p.m.game at rival Drexel.
