NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Herb Courtney (at right) drained a three-pointer with just 1.2 seconds left to play as the University of Delaware shook off a tough shooting night and rallied to down UNC Wilmington 68-67 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball thriller Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Courtney's game-winner, which capped an 11-3 surge over the final three minutes and marked the Blue Hens' first lead since the opening seconds of the game, helped Delaware snap a three-game losing streak and keep pace in the top half of the league standings.

Brian Johnson and Edwin Santiago each led the Blue Hens (10-12, 7-5 CAA) with 15 points while Courtney finished with 13 and Marc Egerson compiled his first double-double as a Blue Hen with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

The Hens, whose last six games have all been decided by six points or less, shot just 39.4 percent from the field (26 of 66) and was outrebounded 44-33 but committed just six turnovers the entire night.

UNC Wilmington (14-10, 7-5 CAA), which lost its second straight following a five-game win streak, got 18 points from T.J. Carter and 17 points from Todd Hendley while Daniel Fountain added 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists and Vladimir Kuljanin contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

The Seahawks hit 12 of 24 shots from the field in the second half and were 8 of 13 for the game from the three-point line, but hurt themselves with 17 turnovers and 11 of 21 shooting from the foul line, including 7 of 16 in the second stanza.

“We hung in there tonight and Herb hit the shot for us in the end,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We got some big defensive stops late in the game and we got fortunate when they missed a couple of free throws. The effort from our guys off the bench really gave us a lift tonight.”

Delaware trailed the entire second half and was down nine points at 64-55 with 3:23 left before mounting a furious comeback. Johnson hit a jumper in the lane and Egerson hit a turnaround jumper from the left baseline to cut the lead to 64-63 with 23 seconds left. After two free throws by UNC Wilmington’s Chad Tomko increased the Seahawk lead to 66-63, Johnson hit another jumper to narrow the margin to 66-65 with 14 seconds left.

Tomko hit another free throw with 12 seconds left for a 67-65 UNCW lead, but his second shot from the line missed, giving the Hens the opportunity for the win. With no timeouts left, the Hens came down, worked the ball around, and hit the game-winner with 1.2 seconds left when Johnson fed Courtney for a three-pointer from the top right of the arc.

UNC Wilmington had the chance to tie, but Hendley’s high inbounds pass hit the hanging center scoreboard, giving possession back to Delaware. Courtney was later fouled and missed the first shot. He purposely missed the second shot and Hendley grabbed the rebound deep in the corner, but the length of the court heave bounced off the rim to end the game.

Delaware, which has now shot under 40 percent from the field in four straight games, struggled from the field again as the Hens missed their first 10 shots from beyond the three-point arc and finished hitting just 6 of 22 from long distance.

The Hens hit just 13 of 36 shots in the first half and trailed by as much as 15 points at 27-12 before narrowing the gap to 34-29 at the break.
