TOLEDO, OH -- Blue Hen junior guard Marc Egerson posted team-highs of 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as the University of Delaware men’s basketball team handed Toledo a rare home loss by defeating the Rockets, 77-69, in an O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters game Saturday night at Savage Hall.

Egerson (at right) went 7 of 11 from the field including 5 of 6 from three-point range for the Blue Hens, who improved to 12-15 overall and won for the first time in seven all-time meetings with Toledo. Senior Herb Courtney scored 18 points on 7 of 8 shooting and added six rebounds, while sophomore Brian Johnson contributed 12 points and five assists. Alphonso Dawson was the fourth double figure scorer with 11 points for Delaware, which shot a season-high 58.7 percent from the field including 9 of 16 from behind the arc.

Jonathan Amos scored 16 points for Toledo, which dropped to 8-17 overall and had its seven-game home winning streak snapped. The Rockets, who entered the game 8-1 at Savage Hall this season with its only other home loss coming to current No. 20 Vanderbilt, are now 54-7 at home since the start of the 2003-04 season. Jerrah Young added 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds for Toledo, while Ridley Johnson and Tyrone Kent each contributed 12 points as well.

In a game that featured a pair of teams ranked last in their respective conferences in field goal percentage, both Delaware and Toledo shot well in the first half as the Blue Hens took a 41-40 halftime lead. UD, which shot a blistering 64 percent (16 of 25) in the opening period, recorded its highest point total in a first half this season.

After the teams traded baskets early in the second period, the Blue Hens used a 7-0 run to go ahead for good at 54-48 with 13:46 remaining. Ridley Johnson answered with a three-pointer for Toledo, but Courtney hit two free throws and Dawson drained a three-pointer to give Delaware its largest lead of the night at 59-51 with 12 minutes left.

However the Rockets, who lost their second straight and fourth of their last five, pulled within 63-60 at the 8:01 mark on a layup by Kent, who entered the game leading the MAC by averaging 17.1 points per game. After both teams went scoreless over the next three and a half minutes, a jumper by Amos cut the Delaware lead to a single point with 4:35 to play.

That would be as close as Toledo would get, as Courtney hit one free throw and Egerson nailed a three-pointer to put Delaware back up five points. Ridley Johnson countered with a three-pointer for the Rockets, but Egerson answered with his fifth three-pointer of the game to make it a 70-65 game with 3:03 left. Amos hit a driving layup to cut the UD advantage to three, but D.J. Boney followed an Egerson miss with a basket to put Delaware up 72-67 at the 1:33 mark.

Boney then made a steal on Toledo’s ensuing possession, and after he was fouled on the other end of the court, he hit two free throws with 1:01 left to put the game away.

“I’m very proud of our guys for coming in and winning at a tough environment,” said Delaware second-year head coach Monté Ross. “Only two teams have won here this year - Vanderbilt and Delaware. We pride ourselves on getting road victories, and that’s certainly what we did tonight. Somebody said to me before the game that this gym featured hard rims, so we might have to put some hard rims in the Carpenter Center.”

Delaware, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won its first BracketBusters game in three tries, went 14 of 18 from the free throw line en route to its sixth road victory of the season.

Toledo took a 21-15 lead with 10:54 remaining in the first half following a three-pointer by Corey Bingham, but Delaware would fight back and used a 5-0 run to take a 36-34 lead at the 1:49 mark, its first advantage since the opening minutes. Toledo regained the lead late in the period before Courtney hit a jumper with 44 seconds on the clock to give Delaware the one-point lead heading in the break.

Delaware returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host Hofstra at 7 p.m. in its final home game of the season.
