RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman guard Alphonso Dawson (at right) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league announced Monday.
A 6-4 native of Harrisburg, PA (Harrisburg HS), Dawson averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Blue Hens’ two games last week.
Dawson scored eight points, pulled down three rebounds and had one steal in Delaware’s 68-67 victory over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday. He scored a career-high 25 points, tied for the fourth most by a UD freshman in a game in school history, while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out a career-best four assists Saturday against VCU. Dawson shot 9 of 13 from the field against the Rams including 2 of 4 from three-point range, and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Dawson currently ranks third on Delaware with 11.1 points per game and fourth with 4.9 rebounds per game, and he leads the team while ranking fourth in the CAA with an 82.5 free throw percentage. Dawson, who has posted 26 assists and 23 steals on the year, is also tied for 15th in the league with 1.96 offensive rebounds per game.
The Rookie of the Week award is the fourth of the season for Dawson, who also earned the honor on December 10, December 24 and January 7. The four Rookie of the Week awards are the most by a UD player in a season in school history.
Folarin Campbell of George Mason and Abdulai Jalloh of James Madison shared CAA Player of the Week honors.
Delaware, which is 10-13 overall and 7-6 in the CAA, travels to Georgia State Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game with the Panthers.
