RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman guard Alphonso Dawson (at right) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Monday.
A 6-4 native of Harrisburg, PA (Harrisburg HS), Dawson led the Blue Hens with 33 points and ranked third on the team with 13 rebounds in a pair of Delaware wins last week.
Dawson tied for the team lead with 15 points while adding six rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot in the Blue Hens’ 58-51 win at William & Mary on Wednesday. He then led Delaware with a career-high tying 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out an assist in the 67-63 win at Drexel on Saturday. The Blue Hens held a slim 64-61 lead over the Dragons when Dawson hit a 19-foot jumper with just 19 seconds remaining to increase Delaware’s lead from three points to five.
Dawson currently ranks third on Delaware with 10.4 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game, and is second with an 82.1 free throw percentage. He has reached double figures in eight games this season, including four of the last five contests.
The Rookie of the Week award is the third in five weeks for Dawson, who also earned the honor on December 10 and December 24.
Frank Elegar of Drexel and Leonard Mendez of Georgia State shared CAA Player of the Week honors.
Delaware, which is 6-7 overall and leads the CAA with a 3-0 league mark, hosts George Mason Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Carpenter Center.
