RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware senior forward Herb Courtney (at right) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Courtney, a 6-7 native of Horsham, PA (Hatboro-Horsham), averaged 23 points and eight rebounds in a pair of thrilling overtime wins over George Mason and Old Dominion last week.
Courtney scored 19 points while adding five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist in the Blue Hens’ 73-68 overtime victory over George Mason on Wednesday. He then led Delaware by posting season-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds in the 81-74 double overtime win over Old Dominion Saturday to record his first double-double of the year.
Courtney drained a three-pointer with 1:18 remaining in the first overtime period to tie the game at 65-65, and after a Monarchs three-pointer, he hit another shot from behind the arc to knot the contest at 68-68 with 40 seconds left to force the second extra session.
Courtney currently leads the Blue Hens with 14.6 points per game and ranks second with 6.1 rebounds per game, and is also the team leader with 23 blocked shots and 23 steals. He ranks fifth in the CAA with 34.47 minutes played, sixth with 1.53 blocks, tied for seventh with 4.67 defensive rebounds, tied for ninth with 1.53 steals, 10th with 6.1 rebounds, and 10th with 14.6 points per game.
Darius James of Old Dominion and Cam Long of George Mason shared CAA Rookie of the Week honors.
Delaware, which is 8-7 overall and leads the CAA with a 5-0 league mark, travels to second place Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
