Herb Courtney, Marc Egerson Earn Third Team All-CAA Honors; Alphonso Dawson Named to All-Rookie Team

RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware senior forward Herb Courtney (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham - at top right) and junior guard Marc Egerson (Wilmington, DE/Glasgow - at middle right) earned third team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors while freshman guard Alphonso Dawson (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg - at bottom right) was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team at the CAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet at the Richmond Downtown Marriott Thursday night.

Delaware (13-16) is the No. 7 in the CAA Tournament being held this weekend at the Richmond Coliseum and will take on No. 10 seed Drexel (12-19) in a first round game Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will face second-seeded UNC Wilmington Saturday in the quarterfinalas at 6 p.m. The tournament continues through Monday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The first team All-CAA consisted of 2008 CAA Player of the Year Eric Maynor of VCU, Antoine Agudio of Hofstra, T.J. Carter of UNC Wilmington, Jamal Shuler of VCU, and Will Thomas of George Mason.

Folarin Campbell of George Mason, Frank Elegar of Drexel, Matt Janning of Northeastern, Vladimir Kuljanin of UNC Wilmington, and Gerald Lee of Old Dominion comprised the second team All-CAA.

Courtney and Egerson were joined on the third team All-CAA by Junior Hairston of Towson, Abdulai Jalloh of James Madison, Laimis Kisielius of William & Mary, and Leonard Mendez of Georgia State.

Courtney has started all 29 games this season for Delaware, tying for the team lead with athlete photo13.9 points per game and ranking second with 6.1 rebounds per game. Courtney, who also leads the Blue Hens with 42 blocks and 36 steals, has led the team in scoring 11 times and in rebouding 13 times, both team-highs. He has posted two double-doubles this season, was named the CAA Player of the Week on January 14, and hit a game-winning three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining in the Blue Hens’ 68-67 victory over UNC Wilmington on February 6.

Egerson, who has started all 22 games for UD since becoming eligible on December 16, is tied for the team lead with 13.9 points per game and leads the Blue Hens with 6.9 rebounds per contest. He has recorded three double-doubles this season and narrowly missed a triple-double when he posted 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists against Hofstra on February 27. Egerson has reached double figures in 17 games this season and scored a season-high 26 points at Hofstra on February 2.

Dawson was joined on the CAA All-Rookie Team by Chaisson Allen of Northeastern, CAA Rookie of the Year Charles Jenkins of Hofstra, Larry Sanders of VCU, and Chad Tomko of UNC Wilmington.

Dawson has started all 29 games for the Blue Hens this season, ranking third on the team with 10.9 points per game and fourth with 4.6 rebounds per contest. He was named the CAA Rookie of the Week a UD record four times this year, and has reached double figures in 18 games. Dawson scored a season-high 25 points against VCU on February 9, tied for the fourth most by a Delaware freshman in school history.

The CAA All-Academic First Team consisted of Terrance Carter of James Madison, Darion Jeralds of UNC Wilmington, Nkem Ojougboh of Northeastern, David Schneider of William & Mary, and Darren Townes of Hofstra.

Delaware senior guard Sam McMahon (Lohman, MO/Jefferson City) was selected to the CAA All-Academic Second Team for the second consecutive season and was joined by Jonathan Adams of Old Dominion, Baptiste Bataille of Northeastern, Chris Fleming of George Mason, Abdulai Jalloh of James Madison, Matt Janning of Northeastern, Ryan Johnson of Hofstra, Laimis Kisielius of William & Mary, Eric Maynor of VCU, and Chris Stratton of William & Mary.

McMahon, a sport management major at Delaware, has appeared in 22 games this season and started the first seven. He is averaging 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, and currently ranks 18th in school history with 86 three-pointers made and 19th with 236 three-pointers attempted.

Tony Shaver of William & Mary was named the CAA Coach of the Year, while Todd Hendley of UNC Wilmington earned the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
