RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman guard Brian Johnson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Johnson, a native of Annapolis, MD (Mount St. Joseph’s), scored 17 points while adding two rebounds and an assist in 39 minutes of action in Wednesday’s loss to Northeastern. He went 6 of 11 from the field including 2 of 5 from three-point range, and was 3 of 5 from the free throw line.
Johnson then scored a career-high 26 points Saturday at UNC Wilmington, tied for the second most points in a game by a freshman in Delaware history. Johnson, who played all 40 minutes against the Seahawks, was 7 of 10 from the floor including 5 of 6 from behind the arc, and went 7 of 8 from the foul line. He also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Blue Hens’ regular season finale.
The Rookie of the Week award was the third of the season for Johnson, who shared the honor with Matt Janning of Northeastern. Carlos Rivera of Hofstra was named the CAA Player of the Week.
Johnson, who holds the UD single-season record for minutes played, currently leads the Blue Hens with 127 assists and 1,152 minutes played this season. He ranks third in the CAA with 38.03 minutes played per game, fourth with 4.23 assists per game, ninth with a 1.55 assist/turnover ratio, and 12th with a 72.5 free throw percentage.
Johnson and the Blue Hens face Northeastern Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2007 CAA Tournament in Richmond, VA.
