NEWARK, DE -- Junior Herb Courtney (at right) and senior Tyresa Smith earned Team Most Valuable Player Awards at the 22nd Annual University of Delaware Men’s and Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet held Thursday night in the Bob Carpenter Center.
Smith, who is currently in training camp with the WBNA’s Phoenix Mercury after being drafted with the No. 18 pick, also won the Blue Hen Basketball Club Outstanding Achievement Award. Fellow senior Alena Koshansky earned the Coaches Award, redshirt freshman Farrah Ferguson earned the Most Improved Award, junior Kyle DeHaven was named the Outstanding Defensive Player, and senior Chrissy Fisher earned the Most Versatile Player Award.
Courtney also won the Blue Hen Basketball Club Outstanding Achievement Award, while fellow junior Henry Olawoye earned the Sportsmanship Award. Junior Sam McMahon captured the Most Improved Award, while freshman Brain Johnson earned the Loyalty Award.
Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was a first team All-CAA selection this year. She led the league and ranked 17th in Division I with 19.8 points per game, while her 632 points this season set a school single season record. Smith finished her career second all-time at Delaware with 1,635 points and is the school’s career leader with 342 steals. Additionally Smith was named to the Kodak/WBCA All-Region 2 Team, becoming the first player in Delaware history to earn that honor.
Koshansky started all 32 games for the Blue Hens this season, leading the team with 106 assists while averaging 7.3 points per game. She led the Colonial Athletic Association with a 3.03 assist/turnover ratio, ranked sixth with 2.53 steals, and was tied for 10th with 3.31 assists per game.
Ferguson appeared in 31 games while starting 12 this year, averaging 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest. Ferguson, who led the Blue Hens with 30 blocked shots, ranked sixth in the conference with 0.97 blocks per game.
DeHaven tied for the team lead with Koshansky with 106 assists while ranking third with 8.5 points per game. A CAA All-Defensive Team selection during her first season as a Blue Hen, DeHaven ranked 11th in Division I with 3.09 steals per game. She was third in the league with a 1.49 assist/turnover ratio and tied for 10th with 3.31 assists per game.
Fisher, a third team All-CAA selection, led Delaware with 7.8 rebounds and ranked second with 13.3 points per game. Fisher, who ranked among the conference leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, steals, and defensive rebounds, ends her career as the school’s career three-point field goal percentage leader.
Courtney, a second team All-CAA selection, led Delaware with 18.1 points, 8.0 rebounds, 54 blocks and 45 steals. He led the conference with 10 double doubles and 6.32 defensive rebounds, and was also among the league leaders in points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and minutes played. Courtney, who scored in double figures in all but three games, reached the 20-point mark 13 times including a career-high 29 points against Towson.
Olawoye appeared in all 31 games while making 16 starts, averaging 2.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting in the win over UNC Wilmington, and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in four contests.
McMahon, who appeared in 30 games while starting the final 22 for the Blue Hens, ranked second on the team with 10.4 points per game and led the squad with 50 three-pointers made. McMahon ranked third in the CAA and sixth in a single season at Delaware with a 43.9 three-point field goal percentage, and was third in the league with an 84.0 free throw percentage.
Johnson, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team, started all 31 games as a freshman while setting the school single season record with 1,192 minutes played. Johnson, who averaged 9.6 points per game and led the Blue Hens with 130 assists, ranked among the conference leaders in minutes played, assists, assist/turnover ratio, and free throw percentage.
The Delaware women went 26-6 this season under head coach Tina Martin while setting the school single season wins mark, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Blue Hen men’s team went 5-26 under first year head coach Monté Ross.
