RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware junior forward Herb Courtney (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham - at top right) earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors while freshman point guard Brian Johnson (Annapolis, MD/Mount St. Joseph’s - at bottom right) was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team at the CAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet at the Richmond Downtown Marriott Thursday night.
Delaware (5-25) is the No. 12 in the CAA Tournament being held this weekend at the Richmond Coliseum and will take on No. 5 seed Northeastern (12-18) in a first round game Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m.. The winner of that game will face fourth-seeded Drexel Saturday in the quarterfinalas at 2:30 p.m.. The tournament continues through Monday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The first team All-CAA consisted of 2007 CAA Player of the Year Loren Stokes of Hofstra, Antoine Agudio of Hofstra, Eric Maynor of Virginia Commonwealth, Gary Neal of Towson, and Valdas Vasylius of Old Dominion.
Courtney was joined on the second team by Frank Elegar of Drexel, Will Thomas of George Mason, B.A. Walker of Virginia Commonwealth, and Drew Williamson of Old Dominion.
Courtney, who has started all 30 games for the Blue Hens this season, ranks second in the league with 8.1 rebounds per game and is fourth with 17.9 points per contest. He has recorded 10 double-doubles on the season, and has scored in double figures in all but three games including in each of the last 14 contests. Courtney, who leads the conference with 6.33 defensive rebounds per game, currently ranks ninth in a single season at Delaware wth 538 points.
Folarin Campbell of George Mason, Bennet Davis of Northeastern, Bashir Mason of Drexel, Adam Payton of William & Mary, and Jesse Pellot-Rosa of Virginia Commonwealth comprised the third team All-CAA.
Johnson was joined on the CAA All-Rookie Team by Pierre Curtis of James Madison, T.J. Gwynn of Virginia Commonwealth, CAA Rookie of the Year Matt Janning of Northeastern, and David Schneider of William & Mary.
Johnson has also started all 30 games for Delaware, playing a UD single-season record 1,152 minutes. He ranks third in the CAA with 38.03 minutes played, fourth with 4.23 assists per game, ninth with a 1.55 assist/turnover ratio, and 12th with a 72.5 free throw percentage. Johnson was named the CAA Rookie of the Week three times this season, the final time on Monday after he scored a career-high 26 points Saturday at UNC Wilmington.
The CAA All-Defensive Team consisted of Chaz Crawford of Drexel, the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Brandon Johnson of Old Dominion, Bashir Mason of Drexel, Will Thomas of George Mason, and Drew Williamson of Old Dominion.
The CAA All-Academic First Team consisted of Jonathan Adams of Old Dominion, Jeff Horowitz of UNC Wilmington, John Morris of Old Dominion, Calvin Roland of Virginia Commonwealth, and Adam Trumbower of William & Mary.
Delaware junior guard Sam McMahon (Lohman, MO/Jefferson City) was selected to the CAA All-Academic Second Team and was joined by Kyle Carrabine of William & Mary, Gabriel Chami of James Madison, Dejan Grkovic of UNC Wilmington, Sam Harris of Old Dominion, Ryan Johnson of Hofstra, Laimis Kisielius of William & Mary, Jonathan Pease of Towson, Scott Rodgers of Drexel, and Colbey Santos of James Madison.
McMahon, a sport management major at Delaware, has appeared in all 30 games while starting the final 21 for the Blue Hens. He ranks third on the team with 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, and leads the team with 47 three-pointers made. McMahon leads the conference with an 86.3 free throw percentage, the ninth best percentage in a single season in Delaware history.
Anthony Grant of Virginia Commonwealth was named the CAA Coach of the Year, while Gabe Norwood of George Mason earned the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
