Lunn's Free Throws
in Last Seconds Lifts Hens
WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- David Lunn
sank two free throws with just 4.3 seconds left to play
to lift the University of Delaware to its second straight
league road win with a 74-72 Colonial Athletic Association
men's basketball victory over William & Mary Wednesday
night at William & Mary Hall.

The Blue Hens, playing their sixth
straight road game, got 15 points and eight rebounds from
Maurice Sessoms and Mike Ames added 13 points,
including two big three-pointers in the final three minutes,
as the Hens (7-5, 2-1 CAA) rallied back from an eight-point
second half deficit.
The Hens, who will return home for the
first time in nearly a month Saturday when they host CAA foe
Virginia Commonwealth at the Bob Carpenter Center, have
already matched last year's conference road win total of two
and posted consecutive league road wins for the first time
since downing Northeastern and Boston University while
members of the America East conference in February,
2001.
William & Mary (5-5, 1-1 CAA), which
had a five-game winning streak snapped, got a game-high 21
points from forward Adam Hess and 18 more off the bench from
freshman Jack Jenkins. Hess, who scored 15 points in the
first half, hit a layup with 10 seconds left to tie the game
at 72-72 and and had the chance to send the game into
overtime but his off-balance jumper at the buzzer fell off
the rim to give the Blue Hens the victory.
Delaware trailed 62-54 with 9:56 left in
the game and were still down 68-62 after Tribe guard Sherman
Rivers (13 points) converted two free throws with 3:34
remaining.
But the Hens came out strong following a
timeout as Ames nailed consecutive three-pointers, the
second with 2:38 left to tie the score at 68-68, and Lunn
followed with two free throws to put the Hens up 70-68 for
their first lead since the 15:46 mark of the second
half.
Rivers tied the game again on a driving
layup before Sessoms answered with a layup to give Delaware
the 72-70 advantage with just 32 seconds remaining. Hess
tied the game once again on a layup with 10 seconds left but
the Hens charged right back and Lunn was fouled on the
baseline by Adam Duggins with 4.3 seconds remaining. Lunn,
who finished with 12 points off the bench, calmly sank two
free throws for what proved to be the
game-winner.
"I can't say enough about how tough this
league is," said Delaware head coach David Henderson.
"We played a very good team tonight and we were fortunate to
come out with a win. Fortunately, the ball fell our way at
the end. Mike Ames hit some big three-pointers, David Lunn
hit those tough free throws at the end, and Maurice Sessoms
came up big tonight. We need those types of things to happen
in order to win in this league."
The Hens shot 51 percent from the field
for the game (27 of 53), including hitting on 12 of 23 shots
(.522) in the second half,, while converting 14 of 17 free
throws. Delaware has now shot over 80 percent from the line
as a team over the last five games. The Tribe posted a 36-33
advantage on the boards, led by eight from Duggins, but shot
just 36.4 percent from the field (12 of 33) in the second
half.
The two teams played to a 40-40 halftime
tie as Hess scored 15 of his 21 points. The Tribe led by as
much as seven points at 30-23 with 6:49 remaining before the
Hens rallied.
