Delaware 74, James Madison 71 February 13, 2003 Smith Leads Five in Double Figures as Blue Hens Pull Out Close One Calvin Smith scored 14 points and posted career highs for rebounds and assists NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Calvin Smith netted 14 points and added career highs of 11 rebounds and six assists and the University of Delaware got big baskets from Mike Slattery and Ryan Iversen down the stretch on the way to 74-71 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over James Madison Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Smith, who also finished just two points shy of his career for scoring, was one of five Blue Hens in double figures as Mike Ames scored a team-high 15 points and Iversen, Slattery, and Ioannis Xenakis each chipped in with 11 points each to help Delaware (12-10, 7-6 CAA) snap a two-game losing streak and down James Madison for the fourth straight time without a loss. The Dukes (9-14, 5-8 CAA), who had won two of their last three, had four scorers in double figures as Kenny Whitehead led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Ian Caskill added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, Dwayne Broyles chipped in with 14 points, and David Fanning added 13 points in the losing cause. "We knew that we had to be sharp offensively to get a win tonight," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team shot 50 percent in the first half and committed a season-low five turnovers. "Overall, it was a good night for our club. We got sound play from our perimeter players and defensively were able to take away JMU's inside game in the second half. That was a big key." Delaware led for the entire second half and was up by nine points at 56-47 when James Madison put together a 12-0 run, paced by two Wes Miller three-pointers and four points from Fanning, to take a 59-56 lead with 9:14 remaining. But the Hens answered right back with an 8-0 run of its own, including four points from Smith, to go back up 64-59 with 7:04 remaining. Delaware stayed in front until the 2:50 mark when Whitehead's layup knotted the score at 68-68. Fanning followed with two free throws to put JMU back up by two with 1:55 left but less than a minute later, Slattery was fouled while hitting a layup and followed with the free throw to put the Hens back up 71-70 with 1:07 left. JMU's Broyles was fouled with 51 seconds left and his free throw tied the score again at 71-71. But he missed the second shot and the Hens came back and took the lead for good when Iversen nailed a three-pointer from the right side with 24 seconds left. The Dukes had one last chance to tie but Fanning's three-pointer missed and Smith blocked a shot in the lane by Whitehead, preserving the win for the Hens.
