Dragons Takes Lead
Late, Captures Win in Overtime
NEWARK, DE -- Senior center
Robert Battle scored two key baskets in overtime and led
Drexel with 22 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks as
the Dragons rallied in the second half and posted an 83-78
Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over
host University of Delaware Thursday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Mike Slattery dished
out 10 assists for the Blue
Hens

Drexel (10-6, 5-2 CAA), which took over
sole possession of second place in the CAA, won its third
straight game and won at the BCC for the first time since
the 1995-96 season after six straight losses to the Blue
Hens. Battle was one of four Drexel players in double
figures as Eric Schmieder added 16 points and six rebounds,
and Danny Hinds and Kenell Sanchez each came off the bench
to add 14 and 13 points respectively.
Delaware (9-7, 4-3 CAA), which lost its
second straight game, got a big effort from guard Mike
Ames who scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the
first half as one of four Blue Hens in double figure
scorers. David Lunn came off the bench to add a
career-high 15 points, Ryan Iversen added 14 points,
and Mike Slattery registered 12 points and a
game-high 10 assists. Delaware has now had each its last
five games decided by six points or less, including two in
overtime.
The Blue Hens had won 47 straight home
games when scoring 70 points before falling to
Drexel.
The Blue Hens had the chance to win the
game in regulation but Ames, the CAA's leading free throw
shooter at .950 who had converted 31 straight coming into
the game, missed the front end of a two -hot foul with five
seconds left. He made the second to tie the score at 77-77
and the game went into overtime after Schmieder's running
three-pointer at the buzzer missed.
"In this league, you've got to win on the
road," said Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint. "We didn't
panic tonight like we did at times last year. Tonight we
needed to get some big stops to win the game and we did
that."
Drexel took control quickly in the extra
session as Battle scored 25 seconds in and Hinds added a
jump shot to put the Dragons up for good. Delaware answered
with a Maurice Sessoms jumper, but Battle put back
his own miss to up the lead to four points and Schmieder hit
a layup with 23 seconds left for the decisive 83-78
lead.
Ames hit five three-pointers on his way
to 15 first half point as the Blue Hens jumped out to a
42-36 lead at intermission. Drexel tied the score at 48-48
with 14:45 left in regulation, but Slattery answered with a
three-pointer and the Blue Hens stayed in front until the
final minute of play, going up by as much as six points at
61-55 with 10:08 remaining.
Drexel sent the game into overtime as
Battle hit a jumper with 1:51 left and converted two free
throws 31 seconds later to cut the lead to 74-73. The
Dragons then grabbed their first lead of the second half
when Sanchez drove through the lane for a layup with 28
seconds left for the 75-74 lead. Ames missed a jumper with
six seconds left but grabbed the rebound and was fouled on
his way back up. After missing the first free throw, he hit
the second to send the game into overtime.
"It was a great basketball game, both
teams played very hard," said Delaware head coach David
Henderson. "Battle made some great plays tonight. We
didn't do a good job of doubling down on him. We had our
opportunities in the last minutes, but we have to make
better decisions down the stretch."
