Top of the World Classic - 1st round Delaware 62, Wichita State 47 November 16, 2001 Maurice Sessoms matched a career-high with 17 points FAIRBANKS, AK -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team opened the 2001-2002 season with a stellar defensive performance, holding Wichita State to just 47 points and 24.5 percent shooting to post a 62-47 victory in the opening round of the BP Top of the World Classic Friday night at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks' Carlson Center. Junior forward Maurice Sessoms connected on 8 of 11 shots from the field, matched a career-high with 17 points, and pulled five rebounds and junior guard Austen Rowland chipped in with 13 points and five boards as the Hens (1-0) knocked off the Shockers (0-1) in Delaware's first ever game played away from the U.S. mainland. Delaware has now won seven of its last eight season openers and have now won at least one game in 20 straight regular season tournament games since the 1985-86 season. The Blue Hens, who have now won six straight regular season games since last year, will take on Butler, a first round 73-56 winner over Radford, in the second round of the eight-team tournament Saturday night at 8 p.m. The winner will move on to Sunday's championship game. "We did a good job defensively and rebounded well," said Delaware second-year head coach David Henderson. "We had some key players step up tonight. Mo's tough play inside was important and our guys did a good job finding him and getting him the ball in a good place. We need him to contribute like he did tonight for us to be successful. We played tough early in the second half but you can still tell we are a young team (no seniors). We still have a long way to go." The Blue Hens, who connected on 7 of 21 three-pointers for the game, including three by Rowland, fell behind 2-0 but followed with a 22-4 run that put the game away early. The Hens hit four three-pointers and Sessoms scored three baskets inside during the run, which gave the Hens a 32-21 halftime lead. The Shockers never seriously threatened in the second half, never pulling closer than nine points at 39-30 with 13:33 left to play. The Hens reeled off seven straight points after that on a Sessoms basket, a three-pointer by freshman guard Mike Slattery, and two free throws by Rowland. Wichita State's 47 points was the lowest point total allowed by the Blue Hens since posting a 68-46 win over Maine in the 2000 America East conference tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center. Wichita State, coming off a 9-19 record a year ago as members of the Missouri Valley Conference, hit on just 5 of 25 first half shots and just 13 of 53 for the game for a .245 mark. Freshman guard Randy Burns came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points and freshman forward Rob Kampman pulled 10 rebounds. Wichita State starters combined to hit just 3 of 26 shots from the field and score 18 points.
