Delaware 51, James Madison 50 January 3, 2002 Iversen Sinks Winning Free Throw as Blue Hens Rally for CAA Win Ryan Iversen (32) hits the winning free throw with 3.7 seconds left to play NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Ryan Iversen converted one of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left as the University of Delaware got past James Madison 51-50 in a closely-fought Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball contest Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware (6-5), making its CAA home opener, won its third straight game as sophomore Mike Ames scored 14 points and junior guard Vohn Hunter came off the bench to add 13 points. James Madison (7-4, 0-2) had a four-game win streak snapped despite getting 16 points from guard David Fanning and 12 points from forward Dwayne Broyles. Fanning entered the game as the CAA's leading scorer at 20.9 points per game. The game was the first ever between the two teams. The game featured nine ties and 17 lead changes and neither team ever led by more than six points. The 101 combined points was the lowest in a game involving Delaware since the BCC opened in 1992-93, a span of 128 games. The previous low was 108 points scored in a game in which Maine defeated the Blue Hens 56-52 on Feb. 13, 1997. It was a sluggish performance for both teams as Delaware shot 34 percent from the field (18 of 53) and converted on just 6 of 24 three-pointers. The Dukes, who did not score in the final four minutes and 31 seconds, hit on 36.4 percent of their shots (20 of 55), including 6 of 16 three-pointers. The teams combined to commit just 22 fouls and attempt 16 free throws. The team traded leads numerous times during the second half before James Madison went up 50-44 with 4:31 left to play. But Delaware battled back as Hunter hit a three-pointer with 3:19 to cut the lead to three and Ames tied the score on another three-pointer with 1:57 remaining. Both teams traded turnovers before the Hens clinched the win on Iversen's free throw. Iversen drove to the basket with 3.7 seconds left but was fouled by Broyles. After a JMU timeout, Iversen missed on his first attempt. James Madison followed with another timeout, but Iversen came back and calmly sank the second free throw for the game-winner.
