HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Hofstra
University jumped ahead early and never looked back as it
handed the University of Delaware men's basketball team its
second-straight Colonial Athletic Association loss, 74-67,
at Hofstra Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (8-11, 4-5 CAA) have now
lost four of its last five games.
The Blue Hens dug themselves a hole early
shotting just 27 percent from the field in the first half,
as the Pride stormed out to a 24-6 led. Rick Apodaca and
Michael Radziejewski each scored 10 in the first half as
Hofstra took a 37-23 halftime lead.
Delaware started the second half
outscoring Hofstra 26-16 in the first 10 minutes. A Mike
Ames jumper with 12:12 remaining capped a nine-point run
that cut the Hofstra (9-11, 4-5) lead to six points at
49-43.
The Blue Hens cut deeper into the Pride
lead when Austen Rowland hit a three pointer with
4:47 left to pull Delaware to within five points at 59-54.
Delaware managed to get the ball back on the next possession
but failed to connect on three shots.
Later, the Hens managed to cut the lead
to four with 23 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by
Ames, but the foul shooting of Apodaca did not allow the
Hens any closer. The junior converted 7 of 8 free throw
attempts in the final minute to keep the Hens are arms
length.
Apodaca led all players 25 point and
Woody Souffrant dished out 10 assists for the Pride. Hofstra
shot 23-27 from the charity stripe.
The Delaware bench outscored Hofstra's
bench 35-13, as Rowland came in to score 15 points and
Sean Knitter finished with 14. Ames also posted 14
points for Blue Hens. Freshman Mike Slattery earned
his first career start in place of Rowland.
The game was a rematch of the last two
America East championships won by the Pride at Hofstra
Arena.
The Blue Hens look to end their two-game
losing streak when they host CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth
on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
