Delaware 78, Drexel 73 January 19, 2002 Blue Hens Break Out of Scoring Slump to Down Rival Drexel Vohn Hunter netted a career-high 17 points for the Hens NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware broke out of a scoring slump as Vohn Hunter scored a career-high 17 points to lead five scorers in doubles figures as the Blue Hens defeated Drexel 78-73 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball game Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (8-9, 4-3 CAA), held under 60 points in each of the last six games, broke out with a 49-point second half that helped them erase a four-point halftime deficit and snap a two-game losing streak. Drexel, which had won six of its last eight games, dropped to 8-9, 5-3 CAA despite 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots from center Robert Battle. Delaware downed Drexel for the fifth straight time at home. Delaware, playing its first home game since Dec. 30, received a balanced effort as Hunter, a junior college transfer, netted a career-high 17 points, including 7 of 10 free throws. Also for the Hens, guard Austen Rowland added 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, center Maurice Sessoms added 12 points, Mike Ames chipped in with 11, and Ryan Iversen came off the bench to add 11 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Drexel also got 16 points off the bench from forward Sean Brooks while guard Eric Schmieder added 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. The Dragons held a small lead for most of the first half and took a 33-29 advantage into intermission. Drexel maintained that lead until the 11:35 mark when Ames, the Hens' leading scorer who had been held without a field goal the last two games and was 1 for his last 14 three-point attempts, hit a three-pointer to put the Hens up 51-50. After four more lead changes, Delaware went up for good as Robin Wentt nailed two free throws with 8:10 left to break a 58-58 tie. The Dragons stayed close, but could never regain the lead. Drexel cut the lead to three points four times in the final 3:51, the last time at 74-71 with 29 seconds left when Schmieder hit one of two free throws. But the Hens, who converted 15 straight free throws at one point, nailed four from the charity stripe in the final 27 seconds to put the game away.
