Bowling Green 73, Delaware 70
November 18, 2001

Mike Ames connected for a career-high 24 points

FAIRBANKS, AK -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point second half deficit to tie the game in the final minute but couldn't pull out the win in suffering a 73-70 setback to Bowling Green in the Hens' final game at the BP Top of the World Classic Sunday afternoon at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks' Carlson Center.

Delaware sophomore guard Mike Ames (St. Pius X/Pottstown, PA) erupted for a career-high 24 points, including five three-pointers, but his three-point attempt to send the game into overtime bounced off the rim at the buzzer, giving Bowling Green (2-1) the win and third place in the tournament. The Blue Hens (1-2), who opened the tournament with a 62-47 win over Wichita State and followed with a 76-59 loss to Butler, finished in fifth place in the eight-team field. The tournament marked UD's first trip to the state of Alaska.

Blue Hen sophomore Robin Wentt added a season-high 13 points to go with five rebounds and held Bowling Green's leading scorer, senior guard Keith McLeod, in check for most of the night. McLeod, who scored 61 points in the first two games of the tournament, scored just eight points vs. Delaware but did connect on two free throws in the final minute to give Bowling Green the lead for good at 72-70. Sophomore forward Josh Almanson came off the bench to lead the Falcons with 21 points while center Len Matela added 14 points.

Delaware trailed by as much as 16 points in the second half before chipping away at the lead as Ames scored eight straight points to pull the Hens to within six points at 61-56. The Hens later tied the score at 68-68 with 3:22 left to play on a three-pointer by Austen Rowland.

McLeod scored just his second basket of the day with 2:00 left to give Bowling Green a 70-68 lead but Rowland came back with two free throws to knot the score at 70-70. McLeod's free throws with 48 seconds proved to be the game-winner. Rowland had the chance to give the Hens the lead but his three-pointer was off the mark with 12 seconds left and Bowling Green rebounded. Brandon Pardon hit one of two free throws for a 73-70 Falcon ead before Ames' final shot just missed.

"I was proud of our effort," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team will open its home season Saturday vs. LaSalle. "We played late last night (vs. Butler) and had to come back this afternoon with little preparation. Still, we showed a lot of heart in battling back."

Delaware led 34-33 with 2:55 left in the first half but went scoreless for the next seven plus minutes into the second half. When Ames' finally connected on a jumper with 15:06 left to play, Bowling Green had reeled off 15 straight points for a 48-34 lead.
