University of Delaware Golfers Place 17th at First Market Bank Intercollegiate Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware golf team shot one stroke better Tuesday but dropped one spot and finished 17th at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by William & Mary at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort.

Delaware shot 310 on Monday and 309 on Tuesday to finish with a team score of 619 and placed 17th overall out of 19 teams at the tournament, which was the Blue Hens’ first tournament of the spring season.

Jeff Griest (at right) led the Blue Hens with a 35th place finish as he fired scores of 77 on Monday and 72 on Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole score of 149 on the par 71, 6,809-yard course.

Francis Marion captured the team title with a score of 569, seven strokes better than runner-up Detroit Mercy (576). Gardner-Webb was third followed by Florida Golf Coast University, James Madison, Richmond, Liberty, St. Bonaventure, Bucknell, and Georgetown in the top 10. Saint Joseph’s was 11th followed by Towson, William & Mary, Temple, Army, George Mason, Delaware, Bradley, and Villanova. Delaware finished just six strokes behind George Mason.

Also for the Hens, Kevin McLister was 59th at 153 (76-77), Tommy Ellison was 64th at 154 (79-75), and Jason Bernstein was 99th at 167 (82-85). Colin Smith shot a 78 on Monday but withdrew on Tuesday.

Mark Sommerfield of Detroit won the medalist honors with a birdie on the first playoff hole, downing runner-up Christopher Couch of Francis Marion. Each golfer shot a 36-hole total of 167.

Delaware will return to action this weekend when the Hens compete at the George Washington Invitational at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, DE.
