McLister Leads University of Delaware Golf Team To Fifth Place Finish At William & Mary Invitational

Athlete photoWILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Blue Hen senior Joe McLister (at right) shot one over par in the two rounds to lead the University of Delaware golf team to a fifth place finish at the William & Mary Invitational held Monday and Tuesday.

The Blue Hens placed fifth in the 21-team field by shooting a 295-297=592 to finish 24 over par. Campbell won the invitational with a team score of 575, followed by St. John’s at 578, Detroit Mercy at 589, Towson at 591, and Delaware. The first round on Monday was held on the par-71, 6,432-yard Plantation Course at Kingsmill Resort, while Tuesday’s second round was held on the par-71, 6,831-yard River Course at Kingsmill Resort.

The Blue Hens have now finished in the top five in the team standings in three straight tournaments and placed among the top 10 teams in nine of the last 12 tournaments dating back to last season.

McLister shot a two under par 69 on Monday and followed with a 74 on Tuesday to finish tied for fifth with a 143, one over par. Fredric Sundberg won the individual title with a five under par 137, followed by Mark Sommerfeld of Detroit Mercy at 139, three under par. Matt Evans of Campbell and Dan Mollicone of St. John’s tied for third as both finished even par at 142, while McLister, David Byrne of Detroit Mercy, and Brendan Madden of Duquesne finished tied for fifth with 143 scores.

The fifth place finish was the best of the year for McLister, while the 69 he shot on Monday was his second lowest round of the season.

Sophomore Jeff Griest tied for 28th for the Blue Hens after shooting 75-75=150, eight over par, while sophomore Tommy Ellison was tied for 33rd as he shot 78-73=151, nine over par. Senior Josh Williamowsky, who shot 77-75=152, and freshman Jason Bernstein, who shot 74-78=152, each tied for 46th place by finishing 10 over par.

Delaware returns to action on April 2-3 when the Blue Hens compete in the Bradford Creek/East Carolina Invitational at the East Carolina Golf Course in Greenville, NC.
