Four Blue Hens Shoot 77 or Better as Delaware Places Fourth at George Washington Invitational

BETHANY BEACH, DE -- Four University of Delaware players shot 77 or better Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hen golf team had a team score of 297 and finished tied for fourth on the final day of the George Washington Invitational held at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club.

Delaware, which was tied for sixth after Saturday’s first round, shot a 297 Sunday in windy conditions to post the second best team score of the day. Pennsylvania topped the 24-team field with a two-day, 36-hole team total of 585 followed by runner-up Longwood at 588, third place Seton Hall at 591, and Delaware and Yale tied for fourth at 597. Connecticut, Cornell, Iona, George Washington, Skidmore, and Saint Joseph’s rounded out the top 10.

The Blue Hens, who placed third at the Fairfield Invitational in their spring opener last week, have now finished in the top five in the team standings two straight tournaments and finished among the top 10 teams in 8 of the last 11 tournaments since last season.

Delaware’s Joe McLister (at right) fired an even par 72, Josh Williamosky finished with a 73, Jeff Griest carded a 76, and Tommy Ellison shot a 77 to lead the Blue Hens at the 6,834-yard, par 72 Bear Trap Dunes Course.

McLister was Delaware’s top overall finisher as he shot 73 Saturday and 72 on Sunday for a 36-hole total of 145 to place seventh overall in the field. Ellison shot 72-77=149 to place tied for 17th, Griest carded scores of 75 and 76 for a 151 to place 28th, Williamosky shot scores of 84 and 73 for a 157 to place 59th, and Jason Bernstein was at 160 with scores of 79 and 81.

Seton Hall’s Kyle Morris took medalist honors as he recorded scores of 68 and 73 to finish with a three-under par 141, one stroke better than runner-up Mark Matza of Yale and two strokes better than Michael Blodgett of Pennsylvania.

Delaware will continue action this Monday and Tuesday when the Hens travel to the William & Mary Invitational at River Course Golf Club in Williamsburg, VA.
