HOT SPRINGS, VA -- The University of Delaware golf team is tied for third place following the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Friday at the Homestead Golf Course.
Defending champion Georgia State leads the championship following the first day of the three-day tournament by shooting a 12 over par 292 on the par-70, 6,697-yard course. Virginia Commonwealth is second with a 14 over par score of 294, while Old Dominion and the Blue Hens are tied for third with scores of 295, 15 over par. Delaware placed fifth at last season’s CAA Championship, its highest ever finish since joining the conference.
Towson is in fifth place after shooting a 299, 19 over par, followed by William & Mary (300), Drexel (302), UNC Wilmington (304), James Madison (309), Hofstra (310), and George Mason (318).
Senior Josh Williamowsky (at right) led the Blue Hens by finishing the first round in fifth place after shooting a one over par 36-35=71. Senior Joe McLister tied for sixth place with a three over par 37-36=73, while freshman Jason Bernstein tied for 11th with a four over par 36-38=74. Sophomore Steve Boerner shot a 40-37=77, seven over par, to finish tied for 32nd place, while sophomore Tommy Ellison is tied for 46th place after shooting an 40-40=80, 10 over par.
Jens Fahrbring of Virginia Commonwealth and John Murphy of Old Dominion are each tied for the individual lead after shooting a 69, one under par.
The championship continues Saturday and Sunday at the Homestead Golf Course.
