CRISFIELD, MD -- The University of Delaware golf team placed tied for 16th out of 20 teams at the Drew Upton Memorial Golf Classic hosted by Towson University this weekend at Great Hope Golf Club.
Delaware shot a team score of 307 on Saturday and 293 on Sunday to finish at 600 and tie for 16th place with Niagara, Rutgers, and Brown.
Richmond won the team title with a score of 576, shooting 283 on Saturday and 293 Sunday on the 7,047-yard, par 72 course. The Spiders won by five strokes over runner-up Western Kentucky. Liberty was third one stroke back at 582, William & Mary was fourth at 583, host Towson and Rider tied for fifth place at 584, James Madison was seventh at 585, Columbia was eighth at 586, and Binghamton and Princeton tied for ninth at 588.
Delaware’s Joe McLister and Josh Williamowsky (at right) tied for 27th with scores of 146 to lead the Blue Hens. McLister, Delaware’s leader with a 72.62 stroke average this season, followed a 77 on Saturday with a 69 on Sunday, the third best score of the day. Williamowsky shot 76 on Saturday and followed with a 70 on Sunday.
Also for Delaware, Jeff Griest was 78th at 77-76=153, Steve Boerner was 93rd at 77=78=155, and Matt Grobstein was 109th at 80-81=161.
Liberty’s Andrew Turner captured individual honors as he shot 72 on Saturday and a tournament-low 66 on Sunday to finish at 138, one stroke better than runner-up Austin Luher of Army ( 67-72=139). Richmond’s Jordan Utley was another stroke back in third place at 68-72=140 while Jeff Castle of host Towson was fourth at 70-71=141.
Delaware will return to action April 8-9 at the Lafayette Invitational Center Valley.
