PINEHURST, NC -- Freshman Jeff Griest (at right) shot a four-over par 75 on Saturday to lead the University of Delaware to fifth place after the second round of the Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships Saturday afternoon at Pinehurst Country Club.
Delaware’s Joe Mclister shot a 77 to move into 14th place with a combined score of 153 for the two days and Matt Grobstein finished in 18th place after shooting an 80 for a combined score of 155.
Georgia State remains in the top spot (580), followed by Virginia Commonwealth (603), James Madison (612), and two-time defending champion UNC Wilmington (615). Delaware, which was in third place after the first day with a score of 303, earned a team score of 313 on the day to move to into fifth place overall (616).
Towson is in sixth place in the team standings at 319 followed by George Mason, Old Dominion, William & Mary, Drexel. and Hofstra. Georgia State entered the tournament as the nation’s No. 10 ranked team based on the Sagarin rankings.
The final round will be played on Sunday with the team champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware, which entered the tournament as the CAA’s 10th ranked team by Sagarin, was also led by Josh Williamosky who shot an 81 for a combined score of 158 and Steve Boerner who shot an 85 for a combined score of 164 on the two days.
Last year’s runner-up Manuel Relancio finished the day in first place with a combined score of 143, while Georgia State’s Steve Tiley sits in second with a score of 144. Georgia State’s Mark Haastrup and Ben Taylor are tied for third with combined scores of 145. Georgia State placed four of its five players in the top five.
Delaware is looking for its best ever finish at the CAA Tournament after never placing higher than eighth in four other championship appearances and no Blue Hen individual has finished higher than McLister’s 23rd place showing last season.
